Item description for Chosen By God by R. C. Sproul...
Overview Here is a clear scriptural case for the classic (and sometimes controversial) Christian doctrine of predestination. Through this view of a truly sovereign God, readers will see how sinfulness prevents man from choosing God on his own; instead, God must change people's hearts.
Publishers Description With nearly 200,000 copies sold in its 25 years, "Chosen by God" by Dr. R. C. Sproul is a contemporary classic on predestination, a doctrine that isn't just for Calvinists, says Sproul. It is a doctrine for "all" biblical Christians. In this updated and expanded edition of "Chosen by God," Sproul shows that the doctrine of predestination doesn't create a whimsical or spiteful picture of God, but paints a portrait of a loving God who provides redemption for radically corrupt humans. We choose God because he has opened our eyes to see his beauty; we love him because he first loved us. There is mystery in God's ways, but not contradiction.

Let the Bible Speak and you will become... Jan 9, 2007
Honestly, I fought the doctrine of election. But I had to surrender to the teachings of Scripture. It is at the heart of the Scriptures, and RC does a great job in this wonderful volume spotlighting the difficulty with it.
This is one of the better volumes on a difficult subject. Highly recommended!
Great book. Jan 3, 2007
It all started with RC Sprouls book: Chosen by God. Geisler wrote a response book called: Chosen by free. James White responded to Geislers book with: The Potters Freedom.
Read them all for a viewpoint from each side.
This book is excellent introduction to Calvinism. It is not insulting to your intelligence at all but just a good place to get started in learning about predestination.
Chosen by God Mar 25, 2006
A professorial dissertation on predestination and Reformed theology. Much human logic and illustrations but not much specific reference to Scripture. No challenge to the reader to search out the truth from the Scriptures, but a clear and somewhat contradictory presentation of the Reformed view.
An Excellent Overview - Highly Recommend! Mar 20, 2006
I found this to be an excellent overview of the Calvinist point-of-view for Predestination. Dr. Sproul's arguements are presented in a very readable and logical manner. If your are interested in learning more on this subject, then I would very much recommend a new DvD entitled "Amazing Grace". The more I learn about this subject, the more I am compelled to believe that it is, in fact, the correct point-of-view. But, please read it and decide for yourself.
Clear, Simple . . . . Perhaps too Simple Feb 21, 2006
Depending where you are on your journey of intellectual advance, this work is either completely useless or invaluable. To those who have even a smattering of an introduction to this doctrine, please go elsewhere. This book is for beginners!
If you are, however, UN-initiated in the complexities of determinism and its applications, including theology (salvation in this instance), this book will provide the absolutely invaluable service of providing the clearest and freshest introduction to the subject that one can find in print. You will feast on its lucid brevity and your imagination will ineffably be lifted to a new horizon.
That being said, having read this work, I suggest you buttress your imagination by acquiring works that delve more into and take into account the technical aspects and uses of the Greek and the history surrounding those to whom the letters containing the supposed doctrine were written. Chosen By God does not adequately conduct the exegesis required to secure authentic certainty in the truthfulness of this doctrine. So all that is learned in this book (the implications and the applications) may be unfounded in the end. Theological studies have the inherent weakness of assuming too much about the text--and Sproul falters in this regard as well. To be sure, he does refer to the TDNT (the theological dictionary of the new testament), but not in detail.
Read this fine work but supplement its weaknesses by studying the details.
