I Love These Books! May 13, 2010
This is now book number 12 in this North Dakota series and I still can't put them down. They are such good books. The hardships these people endured and all the hard work make me appreciate all the things I take for granted every day. These are wonderful stories, even better if you are from the midwest. Don't pass these up.

A Touch of Grace (Daughters of Blessing #3)
Grace is the beloved twin of Sophie, and is deaf. She has been involved in all the series of the Red River Valley, and this is the 12th book in the third of the series. First there was the "Red River Of The North," then "Return To Red River," and this series is #3, "Daughters Of Blessing." I'd highly recommend reading all of the previous books in these 3 series before reading this book, as you will know the life of Grace, and her parents. Kaaren was an immigrant from Norway in the beginning of the series (Grace's Mom) and all the people of Blessing. This book is excellent! We have grown to love Grace, in spite of her deafness. Her learning and teaching sign language have been very amazing to all. In this book we have: an earlier character's son learns to farm, a new kerosene iron, two beloved friends, some family members move and break hearts due to a job, an argument ensues over buying things, a man saves Grace, a heartbreak, a man's family members arrive in Blessing, a marriage, a man in a quandry, a man falls in love, an evil man arrives in town, a man in love with a Grafton woman, a terrible sickness bringing death to many, two travel on a train for many days, a man speaks to his parents regarding his future, a teacher arrives, some welcome gifts, a deal is struck, a beloved family member not acting himself, a love gift, and a trip home. I can't say how much I enjoyed reading this story! All of Snelling's books in these 3 series are terrific, and I highly recommend them for anybody to read. She sure has a gift with her words; still using her words to paint beautiful word pictures in all of her books! You will enjoy this book immensely!

A Touch of Grace By Lauraine Snelling Review by Deborah Khuanghlawn
In the third book in the Daughters of Blessings series we are told the story of Grace Knutson, the daughter of Lars and Kaaren. Because she is deaf, she has always had to rely on everyone else, therefore earning the nickname "Grace Always." But she wants to break out of that mold, and her opportunity comes when Jonathan Gould arrives from the city to stay with the Bjorklands. His city ways and her country style seem to blend well together to the point where Grace leaves home to go to New York. Now she has to rely on herself to break barriers and prove that she can survive on her own.
Grace has always been one of my favorite characters since her first appearance in the original series. I think I liked her best because she had a unique challenge to overcome. At the time being deaf was like a death sentence, but she was able to overcome it and live like a normal person. I was really amazed at how well she was able to adapt to living on the farm and that she could speak both English and Norwegian without ever hearing it. It must have been really difficult for those who were handicapped back in the day. People were not as informed of disabilities as they are now.
It's sad about the way Grace was treated especially by Jonathan's mother and the fact that she thought Grace was not suitable because of the way she spoke. I'm glad though Grace was able to find solace in the school and that was felt accepted there. I was very impressed with the way Grace handled herself in a big city. I liked seeing the parallels between the city boy going to the country and the country girl going to the city. The way the two handled their situations was different and unique. Grace's unrequited love for Toby is universal; almost every woman has been in her situation. The reader will ache with her as she mends her broken heart and will also cheer as Jonathan tries to help her forget him. I think it was wonderful to see Grace finally break out of her shell and display her true identity.
A highly enjoyable read which will keep you wanting more. Fans of the members of the Bjorkland clan will enjoy this latest edition to the Red River saga.
