Reviews - What do customers think about The Lost Art of Meditation : Deepening Your Prayer Life (Closer to God)?
Eye Opening Sep 23, 2006
Sheila Pritchard's "The Lost Art of Meditation" is a book for those wishing to explore different ways to communicate with God, and especially with various ways of hearing God communicate with them.
The book is not that long, (and this is actually a positive point), and focuses on some very practical issues. The chapters include details on what Pritchard calls "holy reading", meditations using the imagination, (developed by Ignatius Loyola, actually), hearing God vias creation and a whole host more.
The book is littered with sections called "Try It". In these little parts, Pritchard gives some pointers on how to get started in the methods previously described, sometimes giving some advice on which Biblical bits to start with. This makes the application a little easier.
Perhaps the thing that surprised me most is how much, (according to this book), I actually pray during the day, (I had never considered it "prayer"). There may be some who find themselves actually looking at the own suppposed lack of prayer life, and being surprised by how much they actually do.
The author sometimes repeats herself overly much, and this was a bother in a couple of places. However, it should not detract from the value of the book for those looking for greater depth in their faith and relationship with God. This is a thoroughly recommended read, and it will take little time to get through. The time invested will more than pay off in the rewards gained.
