Item description for Defeating Jihad: How the War on Terrorism Can Be Won - in Spite of Ourselves by Serge Trifkovic...

Four years after 9-11 the backbone of Islamic terrorist network is far from broken. Experts warn that for every Jihadist in custody or dead there are a few more at large, and that there will be many more New Yorks, Balis, and Madrids in the years to come. Future targets may also include vital infrastructure and energy installations. The reach and operational capability of Islamist terror cells is growing. They are present in areas previously closed to the recruiters of future "martyrs," notably in Iraq, and in countries where a mere decade ago they did not have a significant presence, most notably Indonesia. The network is now global and capable of simultaneous attacks in different countries, e.g. in Turkey and Morocco. Al-Quaeda and its loosely linked offshoots are fielding a second generation of terrorists, many of them Muslim immigrants and their offspring in the Western world. The decentralized pattern of new threats makes counter-terrorist measures difficult. There is no command and control system to disrupt: just self-motivated groups of young people, some deeply embedded in Western host-societies. Conclusion: a comprehensive new strategy is needed, the one that may give us victory in this war; and it is the purpose of this book to provide the blueprint for victory. The conclusion is inescapable; there is a correlation between the presence of a Muslim population in a country and the danger that it will be subjected to a terrorist attack is a demonstrable fact. Muslims are the only group, in Western Europe or North America, that harbors a substantial segment of individuals who share the key objectives with the terrorists. They are, somewhat unsurprisingly, the immigrant group least likely to identify with America: in response to an independent survey of newly naturalized citizens, 90 percent of Muslim immigrants said that if there were a conflict between the United States and their country of origin, they would be inclined to support their country of origin. In Detroit, 81 percent of Muslims "strongly agree" or "somewhat agree" that Shari'a should be the law of the land. All over the Western world Islamic centers have provided platforms for exhortations to the faithful to support causes and to engage in acts that are morally reprehensible, legally punishable, and detrimental to the host country's national security. The model for the proposed measure exists in the McCarran Internal Security Act of 1950. Include Islamist activism as the grounds for the exclusion or deportation of any alien regardless of status or ties, as prejudicial to the public interest and injurious to national security. Mandate registration of Islamic centers and their individual members with the Attorney General; subject them to legal limitations and security supervision that applies to cults prone to violence and "hate groups."

Reviews - What do customers think about Defeating Jihad: How the War on Terrorism Can Be Won - in Spite of Ourselves?

Disappointing and absolutely nothing new  Jun 1, 2008
Srdja Trifkovic's 2002 book The Sword of the Prophet established him the most vigorous critic of the Muslim religion in the Western world, capable of going further and being much harsher than the more prolific Robert Spencer.

It took Trifkovic four years to follow up The Sword of the Prophet, which I recall reading but never bought whilst it was available in stores, and my interest in Muslim terrorism and the future of the world led me to order "Defeating Jihad" almost as soon as it came out in 2006. Unfortunately, "Defeating Jihad" can best be described as an anticlimax because the book lacks real passion and can best be described as a repeat of what so many other conservative commentators say about Islam.

Trifkovic's essential message - that the West and its Middle Eastern ally in Israel face destruction from the rapid growth of Islam and its doctrine of jihad and that the West must re-establish pride in its own civilisation and Christian faith to counter it - is so derivative of what is being said in so many place on the Right that it must be described as utterly boring. Whilst I am not in any way denying that Trifkovic's points may be right judging by the fertility levels of Europe today, his inability to see beyond this clear but excessively shallow analysis made me extremely critical of "Defeating Jihad" from the moment I first read the book.

His basic point that the key issues involve ending Muslim immigration, reducing dependence on Middle Eastern and Central Asian oil and not teaching values that led the West to self-loathe itself are ones that have been stated so often in much fresher terms by people like Pat Buchanan. He does not even look at the causes that may well be right and are often seen in books like the "Politically Incorrect Guides" or writers like Hans-Hermann Hoppe and Rod Dreher.

As an Orthodox Christian, one might similarly hope Trifkovic could offer some decent reflection on the values of that branch of Christianity and how they are valuable in the war against jihad, but there is not a word in that line. Trifkovic also does not look, for instance, at how most Muslim nations are modernising and secularising - though this may well be because they are losing their most conservative members to emigration which is not helping Europe.

All in all, whilst Trifkovic is by no means a bad writer if you read his journalism, "Defeating Jihad" is ludicruously bland and repetitive. There is nothing here you won't find elsewhere.
Not worth it.  Mar 29, 2007
Don't waste your money or time on Trikovic's "Defeating Jihad". It is a rehash of his "The Sword of the Prophet", and not a very good rehash. Like "The Sword..", this book is replete with latin phrases, puzzling at first, irritating next and finally very irritating. Is the purpose to prove how smart he is? And the references are just helter-skelter, some footnotes are complete and some are not. New subjects are suddenly introduced, not explained and then suddenly dropped. And words spelled incorrectly and inconsistent spellings or usage.
This book needed a good editor; the many errors and ommissions makes me wonder as to the reliability of the book.

Just get "The Sword of the Prophet"; it too needed a good editor, but the errors do not take away from the solid presentation. By the way, this is not the only book that tackles the life of the prophet and the history of Islam. One of the better ones, though.

Dr. Robert D. Foster
the truth about mohammed founder of the worlds most intolerant religion  Nov 20, 2006
This book is awesome. I highly recommend it to all interested readers along with author Robert Spencer's highly intelligent and informative "The truth about Mohammed, founder of the world's most intolerant religion".
This particular work , "Defeating Jihad" is the second book by Mr. Trifkovic that I have purchased and I recommend this one more than his first one. This man along with Mr Spencer are doing us all a great service, and we should support them, especially for the sake of those not well informed on the subject of Islamic thought and its foundations. True Islam naturally breeds a nearly inescapable dilemna for both modern Muslims and Non-Muslims alike.
The dilemna as Mr Trifovic informs us is due to the powerful foundations and authoritative textual support that the Muslims we do not like or approve of have as the basis for their actions. These Muslims want to be true Muslims according to the authoritative traditional standards including the Koran, the Sharia, and the Sunnah or hadith, not the Bill of Rights, or Thomas Paine's "The Rights of Man".

Moderate Muslims, so called because they do not wish to practice their historic faith as it was delivered to them by the false one himself, stand on shaky ground and really have no case at all except to appeal to Non muslim, Christian, Western, Secular, Rationalist sources and try to make them their own. Purists will not go for that, nor anyone who just wants to be true to the religion in its historic form and who does not want to insult Mohammed by questioning his behavior, or merits as a prophet. Now while we may see this as potentially dangerous to our peace, considering how many we are freely letting into our country, the purists are not bad in their own eyes or when evaluted according to pure Islam, rather they are sincere and consistent followers in the eyes of many, indeed they can make a more powerful case for themselves than that which is called moderate or peaceful Islam and that is everybody's problem.

At this particualr stage of human development,it simply doesn't fit in with other societies(non-muslim).Islam will always be at war with others as long as it is not on top, for there will always be unbelievers and unworthy idolaters to be made to see and feel the truth of Islam through the terror of Allahs judgement! Inflicted by his human instruments. They are relentless in their will to subjugate other non muslim societies, non muslims are meant to be made to feel uncomfortable and inferior. We instantly perceive the potential evil. They are indeed perceived to be evil or bad, by us, who are made to feel the hate of their self righteous zeal, and to any who do not agree with them and are on the receiving end, but they are in their own eyes -- noble, faithful, brave, and true. This image they have of themselves of powerful, brave soldiers of Allah even has a powerful sway over most Muslims who do not want to do it themselves. We have to know that this is most serious for the many involved on both sides, for we are all affected.

There is another issue that coincides with the first one. That is the smell of blood and rot that is coming from America and Western Civilization right now while Islam is experiencing a sort of revival as is customary in the rise and fall of nations, cultures, modes of thought and peoples. Demographic shifts and aging empires of thought are crumbling, even as we see in our own culture, the past is deteriorating before our eyes and something new is going to come out, something inexperienced and ripe for shock.
The truth presented in this book and in Robert Spencers "Truth about Muhammed founder of the worlds most intolerant religion" is helpful to us who must decide how we are going to deal with Muslim immigration and it is undeniable by anyone who knows there stuff and who doesn't have an agenda or conclusions at which they must arrive.
Defeating Jihad: By Serge Trifkovic   Nov 6, 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.It is well researched and provides a keen insight into the challenges facing the Western world today. The book goes a step further by providing specific, common sense steps for overcoming the enormous threat facing every American. A must read for those concerned about the growing threat of Jihad in todays world.
If his first book didn't convince you, this one will....  Nov 3, 2006
Trifkovic reviews key principles and footnotes in Islamic history and then he updates the reader event by event on the incidents of the last decade or so. He provides a thoughtful perspective regarding each of the many Islamic flashpoints of the world, from North Africa, Turkey, Germany, France, Indonesia, USA, etc. Even the problems in Sweden and Denmark are brought to light (Sharia law prevailing in Scandinavia).

This book has useful material for those who seek perspective on Islam today.
