The key technology for future information processing and communication systems is light wave manipulation. Optical fibers and all optical switching devices have already been intensively developed, mostly based on inorganic materials. From the viewpoints of response time and materials processing, organic materials are more attractive. Although much work has been done following these lines the outlook until now has not been favorable due to the lack of stability of organic materials. Among various kinds of organic materials, nonlinear optically active materials are most promising for light wave manipulation. The study group of 'Light Wave Manipulation using Organic Nonlinear Optical Materials' was organized in 1995 under the support of The Ministry of Education as a priority research project and it has made remarkable progress in this field.
