Item description for The Shaming Of The Strong by Sarah C. Williams...

Overview
The book opens with the happy news of a new member of the Williams family. Sarah's two young daughters are excited, as is her own mother (Jennifer Rees Larcombe). But the happiness is shortlived, as the scan at the hospital reveals that the baby has a condition which will mean severe skeletal deformity. Birth will be fatal. Sarah and husband Paul decide to go to full term and not abort, which does not go down well with the hospital. So their personal anguish is exacerbated by the fight to maintain the baby's own dignity as a human being. Naming her is important - and they decide on Cerian, which is Welsh for 'loved one'. The following chapters allow us to join Sarah and her family on the difficult journey towards Cerian's birthday, which will also be her deathday. But Sarah gives us more - she allows us into her walk with God. The anger, the fear, and ultimately the place of peace and acceptance. This book is one of the most powerful testimonies to God's grace we have ever published. Its impact will be personal and political - Sarah has already had an impromptu session with the World Health Organisation who were eager to hear her perspective. It's not often they encounter a mother who has both this kind of experience and the ability to articulate so many of the issues it raises. The title, based on 1 Corinthians 1:27 'God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong', throws out a challenge to a society that's poised to pass laws which threaten the very existence of its weaker members.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Shaming Of The Strong?

Incredible beautiful painful book  Feb 26, 2008
This is an important book, in an age when abortion is so commonplace for a diagnosis of a baby that is unlikely to survive.

Although hard to read in places because it is so brutally honest, it is an extraordinary treatise to the sanctity of human life.

This book has helped so many people. I am aware of one couple in the UK who had planned to terminate their pregnancy after the doctors told them of serious birth defects showing up on their ultrasound scan. They were given this book, and after reading it decided that they would take the baby to full-term. Several weeks later they returned for another ultrasound: ALL CLEAR. There were no birth defects showing, the previous ultrasound had been wrong. This book saved the life of their perfectly healthy child!

A painful but absorbing reading experience  May 12, 2007
Sarah Williams has been more than brutally honest in sharing her experience and that of her family in this true story of the pregnancy and birth of her daughter who was not going to be able to survive following her birth.

In this skillfully written account of her experience, Sarah Williams takes us through the journey of her suffering, its effects on herself, her immediate family and close friends. The depths of heartfelt pain and anguish can hardly be more graphically expressed than in this woman's encounter with a baby she was to carry to full term in the full knowledge that she would not survive.

However what emerges from this story is a powerful testimony to the strong faith in God which Sarah, her husband and her wonderful mother posses. The fact that God can make something beautiful out of something tragic is a lovely theme which will impress the reader.

This book is not for the faint hearted but for those who can take it on it is a richly rewarding experience.
