Item description for The Gatekeeper: Tomorrow's Assassin by Samuel T. Fuller...
Set in the late summer of 1951, the story opens on the north Norfolk coast, adjacent to the village of Cley next to the Sea, where the quiet, unhurried pace of life falters, following the chilling discovery of four bodies. Alan Brandon, head of Norfolk CID, leads an investigation to establish the cause of death and to identify each corpse. This disturbing task intensifies, as the number of bodies ratchets up to five. Despite post-mortem examinations, enquiries and tests, plus mass newspaper speculation, all bodies remain unidentified. Mortuary tags simply refer to them as Marsh one to five. Cause of death - unknown. Brandon's wife, Grace, visits the crime-scene believing her telepathic 'gift' may help. Following her visit, what she has to say fuels official controversy and deep cynicism, but her ability to 'see' things, unseen or unfelt by others, has in the past, proved correct. A re-examination of the fifth body reveals the presence of a tiny seed-like capsule, hidden deep in the brain tissue, also something strangely incredible about a past injury where the healing process to both flesh and bone turns medical science on its head. A stranger, not connected with Alan Brandon, has his own urgent agenda. The discovery of the capsule is no surprise to him but its recovery is vital, only then can he pursue his adversary, on a dark journey that breaks violently out of Norfolk and heads for London.
