Item description for Silent Night-Wicked Night by Sally Chambers...
On an early morning ride near a California highway, a red SUV blurs by. At the sound of screaming tires, Vangie Seurbeau turns in the saddle, becoming a horrified witness to her mother's death. Maybe if she'd made a different choice, it wouldn't have happened.
Now beyond choices, she's hurled into change out of her control. Her grief-stricken father, a brilliant medical researcher, sells their ranch. Guilt-filled and lonely, Vangie leaves nearly everything familiar and loved behind. She accompanies her dad on an assignment that will take her into the jungles of Brazil's Amazon rainforest.
Before they leave . . . an odd phone call. On the trip . . . unsettling glances, coincidental encounters, and a shadowy black vehicle. All have Vangie constantly looking over her shoulder. What is the sinister darkness she senses following her? Should she dismiss it as stress or simply a vivid imagination?
In Brazil, Vangie finds friendship with Kaleigh Roberts, a daughter of missionaries, discovering much in common. With a trusted guide, the girls hike into the rainforest--and within hours they are kidnapped. Vangie is a target. She has walked straight into mystery, intrigue, and mortal danger. Getting out of it looks impossible. Are all things possible with God?

Reviews - What do customers think about Silent Night-Wicked Night?
Do You Love Stories Full of Mystery and Intrigue? Feb 23, 2005
Silent Night, Wicked Night is a novel written for young adults who love mystery and intrigue. The title itself implies a sinister twist, and Sally Chambers doesn't let us down! The descriptive writing keeps the plot of this novel moving along at an exciting clip.
Vangie Seurbeau, the main character, latches onto your heart within the first few pages. Since witnessing her mother's death, Vangie has begun an inner struggle in dealing with it. Her father, a medical researcher, in an attempt to come to grips with his own grief at the loss of his wife, accepts a foreign assignment. Almost immediately, Vangie has to leave her beloved home, horse, her best friend Dak-everything she has ever known-to move across the world. Ms. Chambers writes with extreme sensitivity to this subject. She obviously knows how it feels to leave a beloved place behind.
Steeling herself to face an unknown future, Vangie leaves California behind and makes the move to the this site with her dad. Now it gets spooky! Vangie senses trouble before it actually begins. A strange face here and a lingering look there . . . she wonders if she's just imagining things or are they really being followed and watched?
A contact who's supposed to meet them when they arrive in Brazil fails to show up, and an American family living in Brazil comes to their aid. Vangie is introduced to a girl her own age, Kaleigh Roberts. With much in common, they become good friends. Kaleigh, born and raised in Brazil near the rainforest, is invited to spend a week with Vangie.
It's then that the unimaginable happens. While on a hike with an experienced guide through the amazing jungles of the this site, Vangie and her new friend are kidnapped. You'll find yourself holding your breath and on the edge of your chair as you are literally placed in the midst of the this site Rainforest. This author draws you in and doesn't let go with her vivid portrayal of Vangie's experiences.
As the mystery unfolds, you will not be able to put this book down. There are surprises around every corner. No one is to be trusted. Will Vangie live to see her new home again? Will she ever be able to find peace after the loss of her mother? Before this riveting novel ends, every question is answered and every twist and turn is explored. With God, are all things possible?
I am very much looking forward to Sally Chambers' next novel!
This book is a winner! Aug 22, 2004
Sally Chambers is a new YA novelist and "Silent Night--Wicked Night" will surely earn her a place among the well-respected YA authors. She has thoroughly researched the Brazilian rainforest setting for this novel and has masterfully woven a tale of tragedy and intrigue into a mystery only God could help untangle. She wrote it for young adults, but I would recommend it for all adults. You will not want to put it down!
An exciting young adult novel Mar 17, 2004
SILENT NIGHT, WICKED NIGHT is a young adult novel with well-rounded characters, a suspenseful plot and lots of emotion. After Vangie witnesses her mother's accidental death, she is filled with guilt and grief. Her father soon sells their ranch and moves to Brazil to research a rain forest plant used in making a cancer-fighting drug.
Some strange occurences before and during their trip makes Vangie nervous, but she brushes off her feelings. Her new friend Kaleigh, whose parents are missionaries, helps Vangie adjust to life in a foreign country and, more importantly, shares her faith.
Vangie is a character teens will identify with and admire for her courage and ingenuity. It is obvious that the author knows teens-how they think and act-and her characters are well developed and compelling. I highly recommend this book and will be on the lookout for more titles from Sally Chambers.
