A Good Marriage in Bible Translations Mar 7, 2008
As one who teaches New Testament translation in an evangelical graduate school, I find the ESV to be superb for both deep study and for personal devotional times. It uses the oldest known manuscript text family as its basis, one that is accepted as the best critical text by all but a few of the most radical, hyper-right scholars. In the English speaking world, it is a great choice for those with both secondary and tercery educations, but who are not fluent in the original Greek and Hebrew languages, being probably the best of the newer translations. In the Spanish world, however, things are different. There is still a wide-spread bias toward the Reina-Valera text. The bias is not due to translation quality as much as it is based on the "older is best" idea that we English speakers see the the ever-dwindling KJV-only folks. Being a pastor of both English and Spanish congregations, I prefer not to fight with emotionally-driven biases, especially those put forth by non-translators, and so I recommend and use the ESV-RV combination. Latino families are bilingual in the United States, and need Bibles that minister to all the family members. Parents and grand-parents still fluent in reading Spanish can read one column (their comfortable RV) while their children and granchildren read the other in contemporary, real-life English. It's also a great tool to use to teach English to Spanish speakers, or vice-versa.
Not really the Holy Bible Feb 26, 2008
I was very excited to find a bilingual bible online because I am finishing my bachelor's degree in Spanish Education. Unfortunately, I was so excited that I didn't realize that what was being advertised as the Holy Bible was in reality the ESV. This bible, besides not being the KJV, does not follow the text of the spanish bible with which it is bound. Any serious student of Spanish, or the scriptures will not be satisfied with the english version in this edition. One could argue that the ESV is much easier to read than the KJV, but if you have taken the time to learn a second language odds are you are proficient enough in english to be able to understand the KJV. Furthermore, Dr. Seuss is much easier to read than a biology textbook, but you get out of it what you put in.
