Item description for An Amish Nativity : Complete Projects and Instructions by Ruth Ann Gingrich & Jan Mast...
Overview If Mary and Joseph had been Amish . . . ! Create a nativity like no other. These charming peasant dolls stand quietly over the manger, cradling a child covered with -- of course! -- a traditional Amish quilt. The book offers clear, ready-to-use patterns for making the Holy Family (and their simple clothing), the attending shepherds and the curious animals -- all of fabric. It also includes templates and instructions for making a miniature Amish quilt. The dolls are fashioned without faces, in keeping with the Amish tradition of humility. But their quiet presence is unmistakably peaceful -- an unusually wonderful addition to Christmas celebrating.
Publishers Description Loss Forgiveness and Restoration. The Face of Christ illustration and the accompanying story that has changed lives all around the globe.First it is a truelife story of an advertising executive an artist and a pastor Joe Castillo and the way God changed him. It also tells of the many lives touched by this simple illustration.Done before a live audience the very first time it had a powerful impact on those who watched. This motivated the artist to reproduce it in pen ink prints. As an artist Joes struggle to make a living was suddenly compounded by having his wife diagnosed with cancer. They had no insurance to cover the mounting debt but at an opportune time a friend offered to reproduce the artwork on marble plaques and pay royalties. The sales of the plaques were amazing surely this was the answer to all their financial problems But the story seems to grind to a halt. The friend refuses to pay royalties on the artwork that is selling world wide and Joe loses his wife to cancer. It becomes a daily struggle to forgive the man who was profiting from his artwork and overcome the bitterness at the loss of his wife. The plaques seem to show up everywhere compounding his anger and resentment. For Joe it became a bitter symbol of everything that had gone wrong. If you have ever struggled with forgiveness. If some events in your life just dont make sense God can use this artwork and the story that goes with it to help you put the pieces together.

Reviews - What do customers think about An Amish Nativity : Complete Projects and Instructions?
My view on Amish Nativity by Ruth Ann Gingrich Sep 23, 2005
I have started making the figures in the book, and I find the instructions easy to follow. The illustrations are very good.
Precious, unique patterns. Well designed. Jul 9, 2000
After "discovering" this book quite accidentally (while searching for an advent calendar pattern), I feel as though I've found a diamond in the rough! This book is so unique, and so intelligently designed. The patterns are simple to sew, with clear and concise instructions. If you've ever matched notches and stitched curved seams, you can make this nativity! Wonderful and relatively easy! As an experienced quiltmaker and novice cloth doll maker, I'm so glad this book even exists. It's exactly what I didn't know I was looking for!
It is helpful to know the scale of the patterns: the manger (made with basketweave print fabric and interfacing) is approximately 4.5 x 7 x 2 inches tall. Not pictured on the cover is a great camel pattern. The donkey, who kneels, is designed without legs -- an example of how intelligently the patterns are designed. Most nativities I've seen are either rustically wooden or regally porcelain. This book is both humbling and inspirational, so in keeping with both the Amish and the nativity scene. I look forward to any future books by either co-authors.
