Wonderful, and inspiring read.  Jan 12, 2008
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in art in general not just photography. I really could not put it down. It was technical but not in a boring way. It inspired and enlightened me. BUY THIS BOOK. You will not be sorry.

Unique find  Dec 17, 2007
Angier has created a wonderful book for any level of photographer. It is chock full of wonderful reproductions of Art -paintings, historic photos and contemporary photography. The book could be used by an entire photography class or by a lone photo amateur. A beautiful book.

A welcome addition to photography connoisseur shelves as well as photographer-in-training reference shelves.  Oct 5, 2007
Academic, photographer, and artist Roswell Angier applies his twenty years of experience to Train Your Gaze: A Practical and Theoretical Introduction to Portrait Photography. The result is a beautifully illustrated guide to refining one's technique in capturing the situational element of photography. The activity of one person looking can completely transform the sense of a piece, as revealed again and again in the sample black-and-white and color photographs, each of which has its background described at length. The soulful images make Train Your Gaze a welcome addition to photography connoisseur shelves as well as photographer-in-training reference shelves.
