Proof of God?  Mar 13, 2008
The back of Ronnie Lee's collection of poems, "The Philosophy of Life: God, Wisdom and the World Psyche" gives us the only information about the author and the purpose of this book. Putting this back-cover blurb together with the very long subtitle ("Proving the Existence of God and Understanding the Power of the Collective Mind for Justice, Equality and Salvation"), it seems he wishes to prove "the existence of God" and the power of a "collective mind" to bring about social goods. This is a huge order, especially the part about proving the existence of God. How close does Lee come to his goal?

The book lacks a table of contents but is broken into three main parts. Part 1 focuses on God, so I assume some proof will be offered for the existence of some divine force or entity. In the 24 poems of this section there is no proof of such an entity that does not presuppose that such a being exists. I think such an argument is weak from the beginning, because all one needs to counter it is to say, "I don't believe that a god is necessary," and then the mind closes.

Part 2 is entitled "Logic and Philosophy," something which was part of the "proof" for God. While all the praises of logic and the pursuit of it read well, once more the assumption is that logic is the correct path and that philosophy is the correct method. If you don't buy those two assumptions, the 58 poems will do little to sway your opinion.

Part 3, "A Return to the Psyche," looks at two main ideas in 49 poems. First, coupling the idea of the "psyche" -- for which no clear definition is given -- with concepts like power, security, and institutions or objects such as the Bible and religion. The second part of this chapter is a focus on "conspiracy," which I'm betting will be the label for anyone who doesn't praise the book as brilliant or as what made them see the "truth."

Poetry can be a wonderful vehicle to explore feelings, but for an argument I think it lacks a lot. When I read poetry, when I hear poetry, I want it to move me, to create images in my mind and affect my emotions. I didn't get that at all in this huge collection. Oh, there are lovely sentiments and a few pop culture references, but frankly nothing that really unifies "values and beliefs" as the back of the book claims.

Given that Lee is Chinese but studied and lived in the U.K. for an unspecified length of time, I have to wonder if English is the original language of this text. It just isn't beautiful to read or hear. It is certainly repetitive in nature, and much of the reasoning is circular, but that only works if one is already on board with the agenda. I don't honestly think this collection offers new insights, only a continued and undoubtedly heartfelt expression of Lee's own spiritual beliefs, morality, and code of ethics.
Philosophy expressed in poetry, this unique and seminal 680-page volume is especially recommended  Jan 5, 2008
A Chinese poet and philosopher dedicated to perceiving, understanding, and articulating the justice, meaning, and wisdom that are that the core of each of his experiences in the world, Ronnie Lee wrote "The Philosophy Of Life: God, Wisdom And The World Psyche" for the purpose of demonstrating and illustrating the existence of God and the power of the collective mind in the establishing of justice, equality, and personal salvation. Through the use of his poetry, Ronnie Lee is able to articulate his insights and perceptions, readily and effectively communicating them to the reader. Philosophy expressed in poetry, this unique and seminal 680-page volume is especially recommended to non-specialist general readers with an interest in philosophy, in poetry, and in metaphysics. 'Conspiracy To One': the logic to the speed,/Distance and time equations,/To the conspiracy to one,/Can be seen as,//Speed of conspiracy to one - how fast others condemn and accuse you of being wrong/Distance of conspiracy to one - how far they will go and the power of the conspiracy/time of a conspiracy to one - how long it will last//The greater the number,/The greater the conspiracy to one.//It is then the worst,/Up to it's infinitesimal limits,/of injustice,/But it will also be the greatest.//There is hope, Even at the worst stages of life.
This is a book to savor, excellent read!  Dec 29, 2007
Genre: Inspiration/religion

Title: The Philosophy of Life: God, Wisdom and the World Psyche

Author: Ronnie Lee

Does our life here on earth have meaning? Poet and philosopher, Ronnie Lee is convinced and his inspiring work will make, even the most skeptical reader, wonder, question and perhaps even begin to believe that there is indeed purpose to our existence.
Not an afternoon read, at 600+ pages this is a book to savor; a book to return to over and over again, each visit enlightening and inspiring. The poetic flow of the author's philosophies of life provides insight into the existence of God, the power of the collective mind and salvation of mankind.
Examples are:
The Will and Sincerity pg. 380
The will of any individual
Group, society, or even the universe
Can be seen in it's sincerity,
Of it's mind, heart, emotions,
Spirit and body..........
Religion pg. 352
Religion is organized peace
Religion unites separated peace
And unites them all
In a common goal
To achieve peace,
Through `morality'......
The work contains too many excellent pieces to include here. It is a book that must be appreciated, digested with relish and thought about after closing. It appeal is worldwide and without boundaries, mental, physical or spiritual.

What a potpourri!  Dec 17, 2007
This is my first experience with Ronnie Lee, so I am still not sure what to make. This is good--Lee is engaging, to say the least. At times I felt like I was reading Aristotle, other times John the Apostle ("In the beginning was Logic."), but other times Lao-Tzu or Buddha. So East and West, Logic and Intuition, Truth and Beauty.

But synthesis is the mark of a good thinker. Reread Plato's Symposium or Republic Book 1 (Great Dialogues Plato). Socrates tackles all of the prevalent ideas, creating his own thought-groove in the process. Ditto for Thomas Aquinas and his (Summa Theologica). He took pagan philosophy seriously because he took his Christianity seriously, and was not threatened by strange ideas. Indeed, both Aquinas and Lee are better thinkers by the clash and grind of ideas.

What really threw me for a curve was this book's format. No jaw-breaking prose, but free-verse poetry. Think back on your Heraclitus (The Nature of Things), Alexander Pope, or Lao-Tzu's (Tao Te Ching). It is a rare thing to mix truth and beauty, and Lee's choice is an effective one. Even the darker passages on The Conspiracy To One have an undergirding beauty to the hardpan truths.

So use this book like a mirror. Examine your own beliefs and see what stands and falls. The experience is worth it.
Taking an existential stand for God  Dec 17, 2007
Using an existentialist approach to confirm the existence of God at first struck me as unworkable. However, the more I read and thought about it, the more the approach appealed to me.

True knowledge will include the knowledge that God exists. This is the one great underlying premise that enables us to use logic as a tool to prove the existence of God- and from there to go on to explain the totality of existence. This is the point where we make our existentialist stand to impart meaning to the universe. This is the foundation stone of existence. All else follows. Once you accept that God, the ultimate Good, exists, then all else falls into place. Existence exists in order to put all things back into conformity with this ultimate Good. To do otherwise is illogical. To do otherwise is to approach chaos- in opposition to divine order. By using our will to establish the starting point that ultimate Good must exist, then belief, faith, hope, even love, now have an anchor point in existence. All else now follows and unfolds in elegant order.

I suppose that some will call this existential establishment of God's existence to be less of a proof and more of a circular argument. I must admit that I had already confirmed God's existence by intuitive Intellection before hand, so this work did not really serve to convince me- though I found nothing in it unconformable to my own systems. As the poet-philosopher points out there are many individual sets of values to get the same total value. Yes, some may come away from this book unconvinced of the central truth of God's existence, but that is all right. A faulty opinion on this subject, or for that matter a billion faulty opinions, does not change the reality of it one iota.
