Item description for The Life of Jesus for Today (For Today) by Ronald J. Allen...
Overview In this new volume in the popular . . . for Today series, Ron Allen provides an exciting introduction to the life of Jesus and an engaging discussion of what Jesus' life means for modern-day believers. Setting Jesus in his ancient context, Allen examines many stories about Jesus' life, including those that present Jesus as a teacher, a miracle worker, the crucified Messiah, the resurrected Lord, and the Son of God. Throughout, Allen shows how these different stories relate to one another to express the core of Jesus' message-a message that, as Allen helpfully shows, is of central importance for believers today.

"Even our best comprehensions of Jesus are incomplete... [we] should offer our understandings in a spirit of humility and openness, recognizing that the risen Jesus transcends all our awareness and formulations." (p. 98)
In this spirit the author offers his understanding of Jesus, drawing themes from contemporary scholarship and the four Gospels. Jesus, for him, is like a signpost directing our attention to the realm of God, a reality that lures us toward new possibilities of love, wholeness and justice. Allen is especially keen to root any understanding of Jesus in his own Jewish world, and he raises issues of the portrayal of Jews in the Gospel narratives.
This book would serve well for a group study on the life of Jesus in a liberal mainline church (each chapter includes study questions). And even those in more orthodox currents may benefit from the alternative view of Jesus presented in its pages.
