Item description for In the Footsteps of Francis And Clare by Roch Niemier...
Overview Ask anyone who has been there - Assisi is a special place. The events in the lives of Francis and Clare seem to have charged the very rocks with a power that can still be felt today. Our guide, Father Roch Niemier, is intimately acquainted with the places so close to the saints of Assisi - Rocca Maggiore, San Damiano, the Porziuncola, San Rufino, La Verna, Greccio, Maddalena, the Piazza Comune and the streets of Assisi. His exploration of the spirituality of place makes even the armchair pilgrim understand the meaning of these locales, and provides an unforgettable remembrance for those who have made the journey themselves.

Tourist's guide meets spirituality May 29, 2010
In the Footsteps of Francis and Clare was a decent book. However, if you are looking for a basic biography of these two saints, this is not the book for you. Unfortunately I had a well-meaning friend suggest this book after I stated I'd like to learn more about St. Francis and St. Clare. This book will not tell you their life stories. What it will tell you are lots of little tid bits (mostly about Francis) which are then expanded upon by the author. Each episode of Francis or Clare's life the author mentions is followed by a few paragraphs that pretty much ask you "how can this serve as an illustration for a good relationship with God?" and "how can you work on becoming more like this saint?" Likewise the author tries to connect physical locations with these important moments in the saints' lives.
In the end the book was pretty good. I'm not giving it a three star rating because I am upset about it not being a biography (that misunderstanding is hardly the author's fault). I am giving it only 3 stars because I feel the book fell short. It ends awkwardly and barely says anything about Clare. However, the Franciscan spiritual lessons given by the author are absolutely wonderful.

I purchased this book for my pilgrimage to Assisi. It was a perfect companion to touring as a Catholic Pilgrim to the many sites within Assisi. The book goes beyond Assisi to a few places St. Francis and Claire were. This is not a typical tour book (no hours/costs/restaurants) but the city is so small that it doesn't seem necessary. What is necessary is to give context and background to the reason people visit Assisi. THe Life of St. Francis and St. Claire.

As a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity, I experienced Fr. Roch 'live' on pilgrimage in Assisi, and felt the 'heart' of this publication at a commmunity chapter and retreat here at our Motherhouse in Manitowoc. The humble, sincere author lives his book. While leaving his own footprints at all the beloved places dear to these great saints for many years, this franciscan friar encourages the reader to do what is theirs to do in the sacredness of their own lives (sounds a lot like St. Francis). A great resource before and after planning a pilgrimage, but in essence is a pilgrimage of the heart any time.
"Roch Solid" Resource! Jun 7, 2008
I had the great joy of knowing and living with Fr. Roch Nemier in my younger--and again in my slightly older days. From my lived experience alone, I would know to read anything he writes. Fr. Roch read, lived, breathed, and preached constantly of the lives of St. Francis, St. Clare, and the early "movers and shakers" of the Franciscan Orders. I was always eager to talk to him when he would return from one of his Assisi Pilgrimage Program sessions.
Now I am preparing to go on a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi with another good priest-friend--and about 35 other people. Naturally, when I saw Fr. Roch's book on this site, I grabbed it up quickly. Since receiving the book and reading it, I almost feel as though I have already gone on pilgrimage--and in a sense I have. Fr. Roch describes the scenes so well--and in such a "present and real" syle, that I felt as though I were there with him.
Whether you plan to go to Assisi, have gone already, or even if you never go--but would love to; this book is definitely for you. Fr. Roch not only presents beautiful descriptions of Assisi and the many sights and shrines; he wonderfully brings out the spiritual and theological impact and meanings of each.
May God continue to bless Fr. Roch, and May He continue to bless us with Fr. Roch's writing and preaching!
