Item description for What Is God?: An Investigation into the Perfections of God's Nature by Robert L. Reymond...

Overview
God has been downgraded! The God of the Bible is not recognisable from many church statements. In fact across great swathes of Christendom you would be forgiven for thinking that God was limited, primitive and unenlightened compared to the completeness of understanding of those claiming to speak for him. The God of the Bible is not recognisable from many scientific announcements. In fact most of science today has managed to box itself into a self-limiting corner. Science, they say, can only be the most plausible naturalistic or materialistic explanation of how things work - thus ignoring the possibilities open to previous generations of groundbreaking scientific endeavour. The God of the Bible is not recognised from many media pronouncements where religion is only news so long as someone is using God to promote their campaign - or war. So - is it surprising that many people do not know who God is? The apostle Paul said that it was pointless trying to prove God's existence because everybody, on some level, knew that already (even atheists!). The more important question for people is 'What is God'. This is the question that Robert Reymond seeks to answer.

Reviews - What do customers think about What Is God?: An Investigation into the Perfections of God's Nature?

No Lack Of Teaching - God Is All-Sufficient  Dec 1, 2007
The question from the title begs to be answered, apologetically. Few, in my humble opinion, are more capable of providing a theological answer today than Robert Reymond, Professor of Systematic Theology at Knox Theological Seminary. That he makes the question seem theologically pregnant and full of promise, predicates that this study will indeed affirm what it is that sets God apart.

'Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible - to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory, forever and ever, amen.' 1 Timothy 1:17

This work sets out verbatim the Professor's chapel addresses to the seminary. Masterfully, Proff Reymond lays bare the modern concept of a god who is unable to rule over the global chaos that currently runs wild, in God's creation run adrift.

God's immutable attributes, in effect, are no longer understood by a generation under the total onslaught of godless language, godless television and all godless cultural phenomena. By exponential and reverential teaching, the God of Israel is re-introduced to the scene - and we take cognizance of His almighty Being.

The Chapter headings provide clearfound insight into the nature of such an awe-inspiring God:

1 The Incomprehensible Supreme Spirit
2 Infinite In His Being
3 Eternal In His Being
4 Unchangeable In His Being
5 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Wisdom
6 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Power
7 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Holiness
8 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Justice
9 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Goodness
10 Infinite, Eternal And Unchangeable In His Truth
11 Trinity - God's Special Mark Of Distinction

'Divine attributes are not characteristics that are separate and distinct from the divine essence so that God can set them aside...Rather, the divine essence is expressed precisely in the sum total of its attributes.' As if God suspends Himself from being God!

With the Apostle Paul, Proff Reymond declares that all have a knowledge of God, for all have seen His handwork, the heavens and earth. That Special revelation as God's means of grace is also rooted in Scripture, he explains magnificently by how even David had a theological grasp of General and Special revelation, providing Psalm 19 as the scriptural basis.

Defying the post-modern posture, this remarkable God-exalting tome may yet increase our awareness of an almighty, infinite and holy God. Too many have a deficient understanding of His sovereignty, and therefore no understanding of what it means to be GOD.
