Item description for Gatekeepers (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 3) by Robert Liparulo...
Overview With their mother still missing after going through a Civil War time portal in their spooky house, and their father in jail under a false accusation, Xander, David, and their younger sister continue to try to bring their mother back, now with the help of an old relative who has turned up unexpectedly.
The house talks. It breathes. And it's hungry.
The Kings have been in the creepy old place, their new home, for only a few days, but they've experienced enough terror to last a lifetime. And the mystery is growing even more baffling. Shadowy and shifting, the big house conceals doors into other worlds that blur the line between memories and dreams-and the slightest misstep can change history forever.
At least, that's if they believe the trembling old man who shows up claiming to know them. "There's a reason you're in the house," he tells them. "As gatekeepers, we must make sure only those events that are supposed to happen get through to the future."
The problem is that horrors beyond description wait on the other side of those gates. As if that weren't enough, the Kings are also menaced by sinister forces on this side-like the dark, ancient stranger Taksidian, who wants them out now.
Xander, David, and Toria must venture beyond the gates to save their missing mother-and discover how truly high the stakes have become.

Reviews - What do customers think about Gatekeepers (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 3)?
Gatekeepers May 28, 2010
The King family lives in a house with portals into different periods in time. When this book opens, third in the Dreamhouse Kings series, Xander King has just escaped from the Civil War period back into the relative safety of the strange house. He and his brother, David, had been trying to find their mother, snatched from the house and wisked away into Time by an intruder. A common family sign, like code words between parents and children, have let them know of her presence. But her exact whereabouts remain unknown.
Their kidnapped mother is just one of the many problems the King family faces. A being from another time--Taksidian--has stumbled upon the house and its secrets--and he wants the house for his own. Mr. King is arrested on trumped up charges and taken to jail. While he's gone, the house emits strange noises, someone or something is heard walking around on the upper floors and a strange, wheelchair bound old man named Jesse--along with his nurse Keal--show up on the front porch, in the middle of the night.
Then the adventure really begins.
Gatekeepers is a fast-paced read, geared for pre-teens. It's a novel with a plot that twists and turns, with unexpected revelations popping up throughout.
Gatekeepers (Dreamhouse Kings Series, Book 3) Apr 15, 2010
This book was the most exciting that I have read to date. The suspense builds to the point where I can harldy stand it as I am waiting for the other shoe to fall. The boys think that they have located their mother in the Civil War Era. Meanwhile, this evil man named Taksidian seeks to remove the family from the house by getting an eviction notice served because he says that the house is unlivable & that the children are are in danger. Mr. King accuses the policemen of taking a bribe to get them out of the house & he is ultimately hauled to jail leaving the children alone in the house to fend for themselves with a police cruiser outside to watch them that night. The kids are frightened to death, but stick together & refuse to give up their claim to the house. The 2 policemen are so frightened outside the house that night that they decide to flee for safety. They then meet their Uncle Jesse & his care giver. Jesse is there to tell the family that they have a purpose for being at the house as Gatekeepers. Later three humongous men from the other worlds come to attack the kids & to do knows what to them. They fend the men off with the help of the caregiver. The kids refuse to give up on their quest to find their mother despite clear & present danger. The little sister, Toria, is given more of a role in this book. She is no longer an annoying little sister. She is loved & valued. Although she is young, she exhibits bravery when she is asked to go alone into the Civil War Era to locate & bring back her mother because both boys are now known in that era & have had run ins with the soldiers. Toria finds herself in danger, but is rescued by her brother, David, who exhibits bravery also. They find & bring home someone only to have the hungry house want to reclame that person. Mr. King returns home from jail & new adventures begin in the otherworlds. This is a must read
Great Series Mar 29, 2010
I am an adult reader who started reading this series because I was a fan of Robert Liparulo's other novels GERM and DEADFALL. The books are very interesting - keep you guessing!! I enjoy the concept of the "portals", which helps keep the story going since you never know where they will end up!! I have started Book 4 and am anxious to see where they go from here! One note, and again, I'm only on Book 4, and there are still 2 more that I haven't read yet, but I hope that one of the future books tells it from the mom's perspective -- would love to know what she is going through on her end!! My 10 year old son is also enjoying reading the series!
Gatekeepers Jan 30, 2010
As with Liparulo's other Dreamhouse Kings Series books, this one is facinating. The story's action is non stop. You are taken from one time period to the next and never know where you will end up. I have recommended this book to many people. I can hardly wait until FRENZY is released in March. Liparulo has a fantastic imagination. I don't have a favorite book is this series, I love them all and recommend them to everyone of all ages. I am a teacher of high school kids and have gotten some of them reading them as well as other teachers. Love the book!
Most Intense Book In the Series So Far! Oct 28, 2009
This is definitely the most intense book in the series yet! I was on the edge of my seat with almost every page! With Dad in a certain predicament, the kids are pretty much on their own for the most part and they go with the motto "Be Strong and Courageous".
It seems that around almost every corner someone, or something is waiting to get in the way of their mission to find mom. Some real bad guys show up in this book but luckily some good guys show up too!
We find out more about the sinister Taksidian and just how far he'll go to possess the house for himself...and what he's done to get where he's at...that dude is NOT nice, in fact he's ruthless. I don't want to give away to much because these books are so great due to surprises and twists in the plot!
Basically, you NEED to read these books if you love a good thriller--you won't be disappointed!
Look for the review of Book 4: Timescape coming next! And then in December Book 5: Whirlwind!
Appropriate for 7th grade and up due to some scary situations!
