Item description for Life and Campaigns of Lieutenant General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson (Battlefield Evangelism) by Robert Lewis Dabney...

Overview
Stonewall Jackson - his very name evokes the image of the solid, immovable Confederate general whose sobriquet, earned at the Battle of 1st Manassas, no longer requires quotation marks. But no one has labeled Thomas Jonathan Jackson a "marble man," as impenetrable as the statues which commemorate his valor. His pious Christian character, service to the church, unwavering commitment to duty, affectionate role as husband and father, as well as his magnificent service to Virginia were carefully recorded by his close friend Robert Lewis Dabney. Labeled by some a religious fanatic, General Jackson was simply a consistent biblical Christian who lived out his faith every day, seriously and without compromise. The battle accounts in The Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson resonate with the first-hand knowledge of a man who has seen the face of battle, as Major Dabney often did as General Jackson's adjutant in the Valley Campaign. His account of military life in the field with General Jackson provides poignant insight into the character of the General as they discuss theology and military history, pray together, and gallop to the sound of the guns. Jackson's theology was supremely orthodox, being rooted in the biblical tradition of Knox, Calvin, and Edwards. In a day bereft of true heroes, Stonewall's gallant deeds and virtuous conduct still move our hearts with admiration. He shows us how a Christian soldier should live and die.

Reviews - What do customers think about Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson (Battlefield Evangelism)?

One of the very best  Apr 27, 2010
Life and Campaigns of Stonewall Jackson (Battlefield Evangelism) This is among the best of the biographies of Jackson. One of the things that makes it so enjoyable is the fact that it was published the year after the war ended and the contempoary attitude of the South is clearly expressed by the author. As an example, toward the end of the preface he makes reference to the oath that he had to take to the federal government as a Confederate:

"I have voluntarily sworn to obey the government of the United States, as at present established and expounded to us by force of arms. That oath it is my purpose to keep. The Federal agent who administered it to me taught me expressly that its obligation was of this extent, and no more: that it did not bind me to think or say the principles on which I had acted were erroneous; but to abstain, in future, from the assertion of them by force of arms."

Just as you can "feel" the rebellion in that quote you can feel it throughout the remainder of the book. If you want to see Confederate thinking on things like secession and slavery during that time period this is the book to read. The author shares a religious perspective with General Jackson and has great love and respect for him. You are not well read on Jackson if you have not read this biography.

Stonewall Jackson  Feb 8, 2010
I am just now picking up momentum on this book. So far the book is excellent and provides a key insight into what this man was all about, namely, a disciple of Jesus Christ. The book intrigues me not only because I enjoy Civil War history (loved the move Gods and Generals), but also because the author Dabney, was a contemporary of Jackson.

Excellent  Oct 7, 2009
I was pleased with this purchase. Book was as described and packaged well and delivered promptly. Very good experience.

Great contemporary account  Sep 16, 2008
This book is a great way to delve into the life and campaigns of Gen'l Jackson. Written by a member of Jackson's staff, this book not only explains and details Thomas Jackson's life, but of his deep Calvinist Christian life. Very detailed accounts of Jackson's battles, with a few maps to help the text, this book is highly recommended.
