Item description for Character Ethics and the New Testament: Moral Dimensions of Scripture by Robert L. Brawley...

Overview
Presents the most up to date academic work in New Testament character ethics, covering topics throughout the Gospels and Paul, as well as focusing on the essential topics of forgiveness, reconciliation, politics, and peacemaking.

Publishers Description

Throughout the New Testament, the Gospel stories, the sayings of Jesus, and the writings of Paul not only teach a way of life that requires individuals to be moral but they demonstrate how. In biblical studies, character ethics has been one of the fastest-growing areas of interest. Whereas ethics usually studies rules of behavior, character ethics focuses on how people are formed to be moral agents in the world. Here editor Robert Brawley presents the most up-to-date academic work in New Testament character ethics, covering topics throughout the Gospels and Paul, as well as focusing on the essential topics of forgiveness, reconciliation, politics, and peacemaking.

In addition to Brawley, contributors are C. Clifton Black, Neil Elliott, Jens Herzer, L. Ann Jervis, Sylvia C. Keesmat, Jae Won Lee, J. Clinton McCann Jr., Elna Mouton, C. Drew Smith, Glen Stassen, Willard M. Swartley, Allen Verhey, and Jinseong Woo.

Reviews - What do customers think about Character Ethics and the New Testament: Moral Dimensions of Scripture?

Tepid  Sep 18, 2008
I read of this book on the SBL's website and there, the reviewer said that the essay by Swartley was worth the price of the book. I did not find that to be the case; perhaps the most intriguing essays, in my estimation, were the ones by Woo and Herzer. Woo, because I find it always interesting to read a view of scripture that is not Western; and Herzer simply because I thought the comparison between Paul and the Book of Job was one not often made. The rest of the essays, in my opinion, travel over the same ground, the Beatitudes and Paul's epistles with nothing new to say. What is lacking in this work and in most works on ethics in general, is the role of the sacraments and the liturgy on ethical (Christian) formation. I find that most works on ethics begin with the premise that people are Christian and hence avoid what it is that actually forms the Christian. The same is true within the Church when she is involved in the community or society: she focuses on `acting' with little if any thought on `being.' `Being' must drive `action' and not the reverse.
