All three of these books are an intelligent way to share the scripture with today's generation. They are easy to read, accurate to the old text, and visually appealing!
The Early Days of the Apostle Paul Oct 24, 2008
Beginning where ACTS OF THE SPIRIT left off, RISE OF THE APOSTLE continues the adventures of Terry Harper, an internationally renowned archaeologist known as "The Bone Man", as he attempts to leave the Middle East and return to the United States. Terry continues to find that he has "spells" where he enters an unconscious state and finds himself to be living besides Biblical figures, in this case the Apostle Paul. Meanwhile, and international conglomerate is determined to kill the "Bone Man" and prevent his discovery from reaching the knowledge of the public.
As was the case with the previous books, RISE OF THE APOSTLE contains graphics that are just as good as anything in mainstream publishing. The action is rooted in historical and real-life subject matter.
The author does take some liberty in filling in events not actually described or as precisely described in the Bible. However, he explains why he does this in the afterward to the story, calling it his "Ten Commandments Strategy" (named after the famous Cecil B. DeMille film).
The book also contains some violence, but none of it is unnecessary and fits very well with the exciting story being told.
Overall, an exciting graphic novel representation of the story of the Apostle Paul's early days as a Christian tied into a gripping tale of international espionage and world domination.
Carries the highest recommendation especially for church youth libraries and as a giftbook for Christian young adults Aug 14, 2008
The third book of the "Eye Witness Tetralogy" by award-winning author and illustrator Robert James Luedke, Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle is a striking, full-color graphic novel that presents the biblical Book of Acts in terms readers of all ages can readily absorb. Framed by a story narrative in which forensic archaeologist Dr. Terry Harper evades assassination attempts and succumbs to blackout-induced visions that give him eyewitness testimony of the first century and the birth of the Christian faith, Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle's core narrative is that of the historical transformation of Saul the Persecutor into the legendary Apostle Paul. A singularly absorbing presentation, Eye Witness: Rise of the Apostle carries the highest recommendation especially for church youth libraries and as a giftbook for Christian young adults.
Koff! Koff! Aug 7, 2008
The creator of this graphic novel sent it to me and asked me to review it. It is the third book in a tetralogy (look it up, I had to), so I would recommend reading the other two beforehand. The basic gist of the thing is that world famous archeologist Terry Harper has found proof that the Bible's account of Jesus' life, death and resurrection are factually accurate. Some people don't want this proof to get out, so they are trying to kill him. From time to time, Terry goes into a trance and witnesses scenes from the early days of Christianity (and so do we, by extention). This time around, he and we witness the conversion of Saul of Tarsus into Paul the Apostle, and subsequent events from Paul's life as he spreads the Gospel of Jesus. The story is well told, and well drawn in a slightly cartoonish style (that's not an insult). I should mention that the coloring is very good, too (colorists don't get enough recognition). These graphic novels might be a good way to get young people interested in learning about Christianity (which is obviously the intention).
Great quality and story Jul 21, 2008
I just checked out this title and was very impressed. The artistic quality is excellent, along with a tight and convincing storyline that bounces from modern times back to the biblical book of Acts.
This is great material for anyone interested in a good graphic novel from a Christian perspective. I'm certainly looking forward to what's next from this author and artist.
