Item description for The Catholic Parish: Hope For A Changing World by Fr. Robert J. Hater...
Overview Through pastoral insights, moving stories, theological insights, and practical suggestions, this book offers a vision and road map for parish teams to examine and renew pastoral ministry in today's world.
Publishers Description In this practical, visionary book, Father Robert Hater draws a roadmap for parishes to examine and renew pastoral ministry in today's world. The parish of today is much different from the parish of yesteryear, he emphasizes, and for it to stand up to the challenges of the present, it must deepen its spiritual roots, while reaching to the broader church and the world. The author writes for those interested in making their parish a faith-filled community. For this reason, he includes real life stories, pastoral experiences, church directives, theological conclusions, managerial perspectives, and pastoral suggestions. These are blended into a holistic approach that addresses the complex challenges facing parishes. In four parts, the author clarifies his vision of the church. In part one, he examines the history of parishes and the changes society has brought to them. Part two roots the parish vision in Catholic evangelization by stressing hospitality and welcome. Part three discusses living out the vision, centered on the kingdom of God, and part four considers ways to realize the parish vision by addressing practical issues in light of today's cultural challenges. Engaging and enthusiastic, this hands-on guide is a must-read for anyone engaged in parish ministry or interested in making the parish a truly Christian community.

A Good Book to Look at for Examining and Reviving a Catholic Parish Sep 19, 2007
The author of this book looks at what a Catholic parish could be.
I would not say that this is a step by step guide on how to put together a successful parish, but is provides a set of principles for examining a parish and revitalizing it. He does this not by looking at fads, but goes to the theology and tradition of the Catholic Church. He does this while examining what is going on in American culture. He tries to read the signs of the times, but rather than surrendering to them, sese how they can be engaged in a solidly Catholic way in order to extend the Kingdom of God.
This book provides a theologically solid book on how to look at and revitalize a Catholic parish, not a generic Christian congregation. In this sense, the book is unique.
One area that I might take issue with is in seeking what the needs of the person are. This is good, but one must be cautious not to be just a product to be bought by a consumer.
