Great look at what b2b can do  Feb 5, 2007
Newspaper-types often insinuate that b2b magazine editors aren't real journalists. This well-written book helps to shatter that myth. The 17 case histories are interesting reads. The book would make a nice present to any b2b editor, to show them how what they do matters. I also think this would be an excellent book for a journalism professor to use in a college-level journalism class. So many j-students think they're going to write for the NY Times or Vogue. This book will show them that the alternative that many of them fall into (the b2b world) isn't a bad place!

The book presents its information in a way that is both entertaining and informative. The book highlights a series of business-to-business articles that have brought changes in various industries. What makes the material interesting is that each piece is preceded by background on the article. The background pieces highlight how the issue raised in the article was identified and what impact the article had on the particular industry in question. The industries and areas highlighted range from child welfare agency lawyers to a Florida nightclub. The book also provides an informative article on how to identify issues that can result in a story that may bring about change.
A Terrific 'Behind the Scenes' View of the Trade Press  Sep 20, 2006
When I started out as a business writer for general circulation newspapers years ago, I often turned to the trade press for insights into some of the industries I covered. What a lot of those publications lacked in flash or sex appeal, they often made up in useful detail about advertising, hospital management, broadcasting, the restaurant industry, agriculture, insurance --- to name a few.

So perhaps I never quite shared the pervasive attitude among reporters in the consumer press that the trades were somehow second rate, a backwater for has-beens or wannabees. For anyone who still harbors that notion, this tidy little collection will certainly dispel it. There's some terrific enterprise reporting going on in single-industry publications, as this collection shows. What makes this book particularly useful is that the articles are packaged with "how I got that story" recollections by the authors themselves. These introductory essays aren't just war stories; they really do provide some useful "how to" tips on running down a good story. I certainly recommend this collection to any student (or teacher) of journalism, but even the most experienced reporter can find inspiration here.
