Item description for Reluctant Prophets and Clueless Disciples: Introducing the Bible by Telling Its Stories by Robert Darden...

Overview
It was once said that all a person has to do to realize God has a very good sense of humor is to look at a platypus. The same sentiment applies to the Bible. The Bible often seems like foreign territory, not only for students encountering it in introductory classes, but also for those who have spent many years in church. To many people, it is an intimidating collection of rules, lists, and theological arguments. But in reality, most of the Bible is made up of fascinating stories. Sometimes they're funny, sometimes they're weird, sometimes they're inspiring, but they're never dull. This college-level introduction invites students into biblical studies through creative, humorous retellings (and a few cartoons here and there) of the basic biblical narratives. The best way to get into the Bible, says Robert E. Darden, is to get to know its stories. In this new approach to introducing the Bible to students, Darden covers the major biblical stories and characters, retelling them in such a way as to bring out their original humor and pathos, and inviting the student to encounter them more fully by moving into the text itself.

Reviews - What do customers think about Reluctant Prophets and Clueless Disciples: Introducing the Bible by Telling Its Stories?

Semi Accurate but Entertaining  Oct 5, 2006
The book was entertaining and gives an easy overview of the Bible. This was the intention of Robert Darden. However he tended to confuse the facts somewhat. In one case he implied that Noah's ark was a perfect cube. This is actually true in the Gilgemish epic account, but the Bible gives completely different dimentions. Don't take what he says too seriously and you'll do just fine.

Reluctant Prophets and Clueless Disciples  Aug 7, 2006
This book was very helpful in taking me through the Bible stories. It explained everything clearly and it was very easy to follow. I highly recommened for beginners as well as for those who need a refresher course.

Darden's the Tongue in cheek Exegete  Jul 17, 2006
Bob Darden's "Reluctant Prophets & Clueless Disciples" offers a fruitful method for teaching adults how to read the Bible. Combining his talents as a creative writer, humorist, and Sunday school teacher, Darden helps a novice (and perhaps even "experienced") reader of the Bible begin to understand the Bible not as chapters & verses (or worse, fodder for 'proof text poker') but rather as a variety of different narratives that require attentive reading.

Darden sprinkles his book with illustrations drawn from his colleagues at "The Door" magazine (aka The Wittenberg Door, typo intended). A visual and narrative treat!

Serious yet satirical and dare I say, spiritual  Jun 28, 2006
Robert Darden brings forth the ancient biblical stories to life in a manner that is prophetic, funny and provocative. Though Darden's eyes, we see how God chose seemingly clueless and bumbling people to serve as his prophetic messengers. And despite their flaws and foibles, God's message still managed to shine through. Through humor, this book echoes the hope that through God all of us can be made anew. Highly recommended for individual and group bible study.
