Inspiration Feb 15, 2010
This is a great read for Christ followers that are looking for inspiration in the area of service. Healing Place Church is a great example of how the hands and feet of Christ should approach their community.
Inspiration and Practical Ideas for Ridiculous Generosity Jan 20, 2010
It's hard to add much to what many other strong reviews here are saying about this book, but I'll chime in as well to say "Great book!" Pastor Dino Rizzo isn't simply sharing a theory for what church "should be", rather he's shedding some insight on how it "can be" and sharing the powerful story of how Healing Place Church "is doing". It's a message about radical obedience to Jesus Christ, not for the sake of feeling good or for building a church, but simply to introduce people to the love of Jesus Christ and show others that they care to God, and to those who follow Christ. Despite the impact of what his church has done, Rizzo's attitude the whole time is one of humility. He's not telling his story, he's telling the story of God's provision, and desire to use you and your church for great kingdom impact.
Even better, Servolution doesn't end just with stories, but have page after page of ideas and practical tips for things you might consider doing. It starts with a heart change, and identifying some needs in your specific area, but there's so much you can do to start making an impact right now. Servolution is a great read, but only if you care about people and want to pick up the servant's towel do something something to help them.
Fantastic book and concept! Dec 16, 2009
After reading the book, my husband and I are not only applying the concepts but are preparing to teach a class on them at our church. This is a must read!
A church built on serving others Dec 5, 2009
What would a church look like if it was entirely built on the idea of helping people who are in need? This is a book which answers that question. It all started for Dino and his wife DeLynn in 1993 when they felt called by God to start a church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to reach the poor and hurting. That church subsequently became known as Healing Place Church.
Twelve people showed up to the first service, and five of them left, but Dino and DeLynn just kept looking for ways to serve people, scouring local newspapers to find people no-one else was thinking or caring about. They started by visiting elderly people, taking nappies to people who had new babies, and cooking meals for families of people who were in hospital. Gradually people who had been helped and those who wanted to be involved in helping others started showing up to the church.
The experience gained by Healing Place Church in serving came in handy in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, where the church became one of the key centres for responding to the crisis. The book is an inspiring one, filled with very practical suggestions on starting a "servolution", and it encourages readers to believe that any church could serve people in a similar way. There is an accompanying website, [...], with even more service ideas.
I am ignited by this book! Aug 24, 2009
I am a wife to a wonderful husband and a Mom to eight precious children. I am busy as any Mom is and with so many children I have looked for simplicity to get me through life. I love being simple. If there is a problem in the house I want to know the best and simplest way to solve it. I rather skip the drama. As a Mom in the midst of schedules, diapers, meals, homeschool, carpool lines for regular school, toddlers to teenagers and all in between and not to forget about trying to be a good wife, I often wondered when do I have time for other people?..... to help others? and then came Servolution. It ignited me! Page 117 refueled a flame that was inside of me. The fifth and sixth paragraph spoke volumes to me. Pastors Dino and Delynn were going through a house fire and that prayer he prayed on page 117 as he watched their home burn sparked something inside of me. But the following sentences ignited something inside of me: "I knew this was my Boston Tea Party. I knew I had thrown a bunch of tea into the harbor that night and the revolution was on....." I have reread this page many times. I have reread these specific sentences many times and each time I am on fire. I am pulled to my feet to repeat out loud "THE REVOLUTION IS ON". I realized that I did not have to wait and put my "desire to help others" or my "serving" life on hold while being a busy Mom. This book gives the most simplest ways to serve in your community. It is not just for church ministries. It is an amazing resource for families who want to serve together at whatever season they are in. The serving examples and ideas are so simple and so easy that our children have served with us and in return they are excited about serving and talking and reaching the hurting of our community. So if you are a busy Mom or Dad who has a desire to do more for Jesus but you think you have to wait until the children get older then I encourage you to read this book. I believe it will spark and ignite something in you too!
