Within minutes of the 911 call the room was crowded with paramedics. Firefighters and police officers had also answered the call. Neighbors, family, and friends overflowed into the other rooms of the house. Before being able to assimilate the reality of the tragedy or for a moment of personal grief, questions were being asked, forms filled out. The constant ringing of the telephone added to the melee and confusion.
Expressing grief is never easy. Often unspoken words or just a touch, or a hug, convey a message of "I don't understand, I don't know what to say, but my heart goes out to you." Richard relates how in the midst of the chaos, "Our pastor arrived...It wasn't so much what he said, but rather his presence and the feeling that God was close that provided solace."
"Surviving Grief by God's Grace" is the story of Richard and Laura Battle and their struggle through the days, weeks, and months, immediately following the death of their nine month old son. John was lifeless in his crib, a victim of (SIDS) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The Battle's have chosen to share their journey of survival and grief. They hope in this way to help others understand the source of their strength. Richard and Laura drew heavily on their church, their friends, and family for sustenance during this difficult time. However, it was their faith in the promises of the scriptures that helped them through their darkest hours.
The book is arranged in twelve chapters. An appendix provides selected scripture passages relating specifically to the chapter text. This allows the book to be adapted for individual or group study.
Personally I have experienced the death of four adult siblings and both of my parents. I am sure my grief was nothing like that of my parents seeing their children taken in death ahead of them. Only those who have experienced the loss of a young child can understand the deep anguish of this trauma. Richard Battle reaches out to comfort others in their sorrow drawing on the lessons he learned of "Surviving Grief by God's Grace."
Every pastor, church deacon, elder, and family counselor should read and recommend this book. It offers hope for those bravely suffering through the depths of grief.
