Item description for Earthlings by Richard Kalvar...
Richard Kalvar, a member of the elite club of Magnum photographers, has an exceptional eye and a talent for catching moments when societal behavior becomes humorous or shifts into the absurd. His compelling duotone photographs document the human condition. Kalvar seeks to emphasize the unusual, and his penetrating lens reveals a unique brand of humanity. He explores everyday life but with an altogether fresh perspective, at times funnier or darker. This collector's monograph was produced in conjunction with the artist from photographic "evidence" compiled on his travels from Rome to Paris, New York to Varsovie, and San Francisco to Tokyo. This is the first monograph published on Kalvar, one of the world's most important post war photographers. Richard Kalvar became a full member of Magnum in 1977. Since then, he has worked in countries around the world, including France, Italy, England, Japan, and the United States.

Reviews - What do customers think about Earthlings?
Addictive... Apr 6, 2008
Just when you are in the last picture, you want to start all over again and again and...
If you love everything that life offers and new ways to enjoy it, this is one of the best examples.
(NOTE: Not a technical review since there are already very good ones posted)
Excellent Jan 30, 2008
This is an excellent photography book. It shows how the natural and the incongruous exist side by side.
Best of 2007 Dec 22, 2007
Just when you thought the tradition of Frank, Cartier-Bresson, Winogrand and other modernist masters was a fading, flickering light, out of nowhere (or Paris, evidently) comes this brilliant collection of photographs! Poetic, wry, witty and complex, Kalvar's photographs limn the absurdity of life without resorting to sarcasm or slapstick. It's this tightrope act, and Kalvar walks it with grace. I disagree with reviewers that did not like the layout of the book... I think the layout enhances the experience of the work, giving the book a rhythm, and making the images flow like music. A must-have.
People just as they are Oct 28, 2007
[[ASIN:2080300091 Earthlings]I love Richard Kalvar's photos. I am amazed that he is able to record people going about their regular lives - nothing is posed in any of his photos. And I particularly like the joy that spills from the scenes. Definitely a book to be kept close at hand to remind us we are all part of the human race!
Beautiful content ruined by design of book Oct 28, 2007
I like Kalvar's work very much and looked forward to the publishing of this title. Unfortunately the majority of photos are ruined by the design decision of running across the gutter of the book.
