Item description for Simon's Shadows by Richard J. Swank...

Corruption, sex, drugs, and violence...And that's just the teachers. Welcome to education in the State of California. Richard Simon returns to teach at the high school he was thrown out of, as a student, years before. He finds that the school is worse than it was when he left and that the school has become the dumping grounds for the school district to house problem students involved in gangs and drugs and who have emotional problems; students the school district refers to as "Social Junk." The teaching staff finds themselves banning together to fight Simon's abstract concept of educating students; simple respect.

Reviews - What do customers think about Simon's Shadows?

Ridiculous  Feb 6, 2005
This book was so poorly written with no plot that I can not believe it was published. What a waste of time reading and writing it. There was no story, just cartoon people with a silly protagonist who inappropriately interacted with students. The silly supervisors were all villains. Absurd and juvenile! The dialog was crass and story line non-existent. Don't waste your time with this book.
I just finished reading Simon's Shadows  Jun 25, 2004
I just finished reading Simon's Shadows by Richard J. Swank and I was completely impressed and taken in by the the story that Richard told. I usually read a book a little at a time, but when I started reading Simon's Shadows, I was unable to put it down until I had finished it. This book draws you in from the very first page and keeps you captivated all the way through to the shocking and heartbreaking ending. I truly felt for these students that had been left behind and made to feel unimportant. I loved this book. As someone who has been in the education field for many years, and as the mother of school-aged children I have seen first-hand the way students are cast aside and labeled based upon socio-economic status. I was touched by the way in which Richard dealt with the subject matter, and I look forward to other books by him. I have a new favorite author, and his name is Richard J. Swank
Way to go Richard!  Jun 24, 2004
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It was one of those couldn't put it down till I was done.
Richard does a wonderful job of showing the ways in which some schools become corrupted, and entrenched in their ways. I love the way the "dirt sisters" can't stand anything to do with Mr. Simon, mostly because he is challenging the system, and providing hope to the students whose former teachers have found hopeless. Mr. Simon is a powerful educator (don't dare call him a teacher!), who reaches out to each and every one of his students. Being an educator myself, I can see myself doing similar things to those of Mr. Simon. I work in a middle school that's not as bad off as that of Mr. Simon, certain staff try to run the school, but times are changing (I'm not exactly part of that). I know I give hope to my students, most of whom are the ones that are told can't do it. I watched my eighth graders graduate this month with more pride and respect, for themselves and others, than when they walked into my room as seventh graders.

As Richard points out one educator can make a difference. I hope I'm one of them.

Simon's Shadows  Jun 20, 2004
Simon's Shadows will surprise you with how fast it can make you go from laughing to crying. It makes you realize that young people can be saved and that just because a person is poor, doesn't mean they don't deserve a future.
Simon's Shadows  Jun 20, 2004
Simon's Shadows takes you behind the controversy in the educational system in California. This shocking portrayal of the schools in California is both entertaining and inspiring. Mixed with humor and devastation, this novel will have you holding your breath until the final page. It will certainly have you getting back to the "Business of Life."
