Item description for Preaching: The Secret to Parish Revival by Richard Hart...
Overview Effective preaching from the heart can have a tremendous impact on so many lives. Think of the effect of Jesus' sermons and stories. "Preaching: The Secret to Parish Revival" was written to offer all preachers hands-on help, an "at-home" workshop on improving homily content and delivery. The author highlights several key elements that contribute to a good homily: relevance, creativity, good imagery, stories, appropriate humor, passion, and simplicity in language. He offers effective ways to recognize the spiritual needs of the parish community and how to address them. Fr. Hart especially emphasizes preparation, calling it a "non-negotiable." "The more (preachers) have prepared and prayed over Scripture, the more they will be able to preach God's Word with passion and enthusiasm." This book is a practical, faithfilled, invaluable handbook for the difficult and disciplined art of preaching. No homilist will want to be without it.

Reviews - What do customers think about Preaching: The Secret to Parish Revival?
nice but not much helpful content Jul 5, 2003
There were some good points in this book, but much I found vague and unhelpful.
Practical nuts and bolts for a Preacher Jul 26, 2000
Father Richard Hart provides Preachers of the Word with a practical book. It is easy to read. The chapters are short, filled with examples and helpful insights.
Father Hart begins with the need of the preacher to be conscious of the assembly. "With whom am I sharing the Word?" He continues by outlining who the preacher needs to be and how he or she can best present himself or herself with ones unique gifts.
He touches upon the content of a homily, such as, the message, the theme, the use of scripture, humor, use of simple language, illustrations and stories, and reflects well that the preacher needs to be a Pray-er, Prophet and Proclaimer. Father Hart insists on preparation as an essential element that complements the spirituality and value system of the preacher.
I recommend this book to beginners and veterans alike. The book is a great "bush-up" and "reminder" to re-ignite the fire in an anointed preacher.
