Item description for A Syllable of Water: Twenty Writers of Faith Reflect on Their Art by Emilie Griffin...
Overview Twenty of today's leading writers of faith--Doris Betts, Harold Fickett, Richard Foster, Erin McGraw, Eugene Peterson, Luci Shaw, Philip Yancey, and others--reflect on all aspects of the writing vocation. Topics include: How to begin, the editor-writer conversation, key differences between genres, motivation and writer's block, the ways writers spend time when they are not writing, and more. Both writers and lovers of the written word will savor the wisdom and flashes of insight in this engaging book.
From Publishers Weekly Members of the Chrysostom Society, Christian writers from varied denominations offer essays on aspects of the writing life and craft. While pieces in such collections tend to vary in quality, the lineup of prominent contributorsincluding Scott Cairns, Philip Yancey, Luci Shaw, Richard J. Foster, Virginia Stem Owens, Diane Glancy and John Wilsonturn this book into a valuable resource for aspiring writers. It addresses the usual beginners' issues (keeping a journal; research; overcoming writer's block), but the strongest section, on literary genres, yields keen insights on poetry, drama, journalism, the short story and memoir, rounded out by a rather surprising two essays on the art of translation (including one by Eugene Peterson, author of the popular Bible paraphrase The Message). The resources for further reading by each contributor are excellent. Most of the insights are applicable to all good writing, and Christian readers may find that the essays don't engage as deeply with the intersection of faith and writing as they might wish. But these writers' love for their chosen art and craft is contagious. (Oct.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

A Must Read Collection of Essays on Writing Mar 19, 2009
Wow. One essay after another that is pregnant not only with profound insights into what makes good writing, but also practical suggestions on how to improve one's own writing craft and write well. The essays cover a wide variety of types of creative writing, including not only poetry and short story, but also creative non-fiction (that wonderful genre that is oddly defined by what it is not) and even journaling. There are two things that really set this book apart (or three depending on how you count): the variety of writers who contribute, and the variety of their topics (I think every creative writer of any genre will find all of the essays helpful), and also the fact that the contributors are not only all gifted writers but also writers who have thought carefully about how to express what it is that they do well. I have purchased mulitiple copies of this book to give away to other friends who write.
