Jarmila is a tragic love story set in idyllic rural Bohemia in the 1930s. A penniless toy maker falls in love with Jarmila, a village beauty who is married to a far older feather merchant. When she conceives a child she is guilt-ridden but, facing a destitute life in New York, Jarmila refuses to leave Bohemia. Her devastated lover asks for one last meeting and tragedy unfolds.
Ernst Weiss was born in Brunn (now Brno) in Bohemia in 1884. He wrote 15 novels showing expressionistic and surrealist tendencies and marked by deep pessimism, something he shared with his friends Franz Kafka and Stefan Zweig. In 1938, he emigrated to France, where he committed suicide in 1940, the day the German troops entered Paris.
