Item description for The True Story of Saint Nicholas by Rebecca Benson Haskell & Elizabeth Durham Goodhue...

Overview
Provides a brief biography of Saint Nicholas, and tells how traditions associated with his name were begun and may have changed throughout the centuries.

Publishers Description
Santa Claus is real.
His name comes from the Dutch colloquial "Sinterklaas," a short way of saying Sint Nicolaas. This charming book, ideal for under the Christmas tree, is the result of the effort of a great-grandmother from Marblehead, Massachusetts to tell her family about the real Santa Claus, a Christian saint born around 260 AD, known to us as St. Nicholas. His way of giving anonymously became the foundation for today's Christmas Eve visitor, filling the stockings of expectant children.
Mrs. Haskell felt it was important for her family to understand the real person behind today's distorted conception. St. Nicholas was not the creation of a cabal of department store merchandisers, or Madison Avenue advertising agencies; he was an important figure in the early Church, and a participant in the Council of Nicaea.
Royalties from this book, published so that other families can pass along the true background of our favorite Christmas tradition, will go to Mrs. Haskell's home church in Salem, Massachusetts.
This book offers families a way to add an element of authenticity to their Christmas celebration, and help their children understand what Christmas is really all about. Santa Claus is real.

Reviews - What do customers think about The True Story of Saint Nicholas?

A wonderful resource  Dec 8, 2009
This little book is a wonderful remembrance of the real Saint Nicholas, who has a feast day (Dec. 6) in liturgical Christian traditions. It explains the roots of our contemporary fantastical Santa in the historical bishop of the early church. An excellent tool for helping transition children who are at "the age of disbelieving."

A good book to read with children on December 6.  Nov 27, 2009

For those who include sharing stories of the saint's life in their celebration of St. Nicholas Day, this would be a great book to read aloud with children. It is also a good place for adults who wonder what Santa Claus has to do with Christmas to begin.

The tone is gentle, and the text provides a simplified version of St. Nicholas's life as well as many of his most well known miracles. These include St. Nicholas providing dowries for the three poor sisters, St. Nicholas calming the storm at sea and restoring the sailor to life, and St. Nicholas rescuing the three innocent generals moments before their execution. (The story of St. Nicholas restoring to life the three murdered students is omitted.)

Other recommended St. Nicholas Day books are The Legend of Saint Nicholas and Wonderworker: The True Story of How Saint Nicholas Became Santa Claus.
