Raymond Briggs was born in London in 1934. At the age of 15, he went to Wimbeldon Art School to learn how to draw, as he wanted to become a cartoonist. But there he was told that cartooning was not a profession for gentlemen and that he ought to be a painter. Raymond then went on to the Slade School in London to study painting as a full-time student. During his spare time, he began work on a portfolio of illustrations of all kinds, including jackets and a wide selection of drawings to take to publishers. After illustrating for advertising, newspapers and books, Raymond discovered that book illustration inspired him the most, since it offered far greater variety and freedom than anything else. Raymond has always found it unfavorable to sustain a consistent illustration style for a long period of time. He is always seeking to try something else new and different with his work. Some of Raymond's best known works are The Snowman , The Man , and The Bear . The setting for The Snowman is based on Raymond's own house and garden, which is in Sussex, England at the foot of South Downs, a few miles from Brighton.

Lovely story! Mar 10, 2008
This is a beautiful story of a little boy and a snowman that comes to life --all music -no words --it's very sweet and relaxing -my three year old twins love it! (so do their mom & dad!)
Ahhhhh. Feb 18, 2008
One of the great Christmas movies. I had to buy a new copy as the other was worn out.
This board book is tops! Feb 8, 2008
I bought a copy of this book to have at home when our nearly two-year-old grandson comes to visit, and he loved it so much I immediately sent for another for him to take home with him. There are many board books, but not many classy ones. This one is. It has plenty (over 35) of lift-the-flaps to explore, but there is so much more, too. The illustrations are beautiful, with muted colors, both indoor and outdoor scenes, and both active and quiet activities. There are lots of things to count on each page, and items of different colors, too, so toddlers can practice these skills. The best is the last double-page spread, with all the houses with flaps. You can look inside each one and see what the people are doing. Our grandson loves all his books, but this one is special, and he loves to sit by himself and look at it, lifting all the flaps, as well as have someone read it with him. It's a truly fine book.
Always a favorite Jan 7, 2008
This has been a favorite of mine for years. It is perfect for 1 to 3 year olds. The one with words is great for the older ones.
Wonderful for the Imagination! Dec 29, 2007
This book is great for kids who have not learned to read yet or struggles with the written word. It allows them to tell their own story with their own words, as it is a book with pictures only! It encourages verbalization and communication skills. I am an educator and use it in the elementary grades -- one of my favorites!
