Item description for The Mystery of the Transfiguration by Raniero Cantalamessa & Marsha Daigle-Williamson, PH.D....
Overview "The Tranfiguration is a mystery of divine happiness." - From Chapter Two Jesus encountered the Father in a moment of dazzling glory at the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. This event took place as Jesus prayed, a point that brings the meaning of the Transfiguration close to us: As Jesus was transfigured in prayer, so we can be transfigured - brought from one degree of glory to another - through prayerful contemplation of Christ. This book considers this unparalleled event from the perspective of Scripture and some of the great teachers of the Church. But ultimately, Father Cantalamessa explains, his goal is to bring you up Mount Tabor in prayer so that in gazing on Christ, you will become like Christ, transformed in glory.

Encouraging and Nourishing Contemplation Sep 16, 2008
This volume completes a series of meditations on the mystery of Christ in the life of the Church from the preacher to the pontifical household. Fr. Cantalamessa approaches the Transfiguration as a historical event in the life of Christ. An event, he writes, "that is full of salvific significance...that has an exemplary and causative value for the members of his body, the Church." In the introduction the author explains that his goal in this book involves contemplation of Christ: encouraging it, creating a desire for it, and nourishing it "with the powerful revelation of the Bible and some of the most profound insights of the Fathers."
After an opening chapter on the mystagogical approach to the Transfiguration, he devotes three chapters to the "path" up Mount Tabor as described in the synoptic Gospels and the writings of Paul and John. The final three chapters address the divinity and humanity of Christ and the image of Christ for today. Cantalamessa traces the development of Church teaching on Christ as divine and human and as flesh and spirit. At the same time, he calls us again and again to contemplation and to an ever deepening prayer life that opens our hearts and minds to the Spirit.
