Best ever cookbook and saves time with ready to go flour mixes Jul 17, 2008
This a a great reference as well as practical cookbook for people with gluten issues. Since Rachel spent so much time researching products, investing her time and finances all with the motivation to help her family and others, she has created a good and practical cookbook. I especially recommend the Swedish Pancake recipe. My family can't tell the difference. This book is for those who have had long standing issues as well as for people who have recently discovered they need help. It serves all. I am waiting for the next publication to add to my collection!

I have been using the Almond Rice Flour for almost a full year now. I also have purchased the cookbook and I find that buying one flour blend, instead of five or six specific flours and making your own, is much simplier and less expensive for my husband and me. The recipes are easy to follow, with good instructions. We make the buttermilk bread on a weekly basis, we use it for sandwiches, toast, french toast. The potato bread is also good. And for those of you that are dairy free I use dairy free products when the recipe asks for milk or sour cream. Tofutti brand makes a dairy free sour cream and cream cheese, that when used in recipes taste just fine. They are not so great right out of the container. You can use rice milk, soy milk or whatever milk product you use in any of these recipes. I've had good luck so far! I am also lucky, my local grocery store is carrying the flour here in my town. A new product for them is a pancake mix. This is the best gluten free mix I have found. The pancakes do not crumble as easy, and I usually make a double or triple batch, then refrigerate them and heat them in the mornings for breakfast. This has worked well for us. I even added fresh blueberries to the last batch and they turned out wonderful.

I just started on the gluten free journey, and immediately came to this site for cookbooks on how to keep at least some normalcy in my life. This was one of the three I purchased. I will admit right off, that I haven't tested any of the recipes. But, the problem with purchasing on line is that you don't get to thumb through the book first. If I had, I would not have purchased this book. I am a spiritual person, I believe in a greater entity, but I don't have the need to have quotes from the bible on every page. I do respect that others have their own beliefs, but I do not wish to have them shoved down my throat at every junction. I will be returning this book for this very reason. Also, if you are, like myself, lactose intolerant, most of the recipes seem to call for butter, milk, sourcream, buttermilk.

Rachel (the gluten free mama)'s recipes are simply the best GF I have found anywhere. The recipes are exact- so there is no guess work or worrying. The food is wonderful- you simply can't believe it is GF. My 6 year old is thrilled- he feels like we are eating 'normal' food, which for a child is such a big part of having a positive GF experience. You definitely can use other flour mixes, but I wouldn't. I have tried them all and this mix is amazing- both taste and texture. With three Celiacs in the house, I am the only one who can have gluten and I used to head to the local bakery on my own for a treat. With The Gluten Free Mama's cookbook I no longer feel the need- we all eat gluten free all the time. This cookbook has truly made the biggest difference to our family in our transition to the GF world. I highly recommend it.

I have been baking for 30 years, now that we are wheat free family of 7, I find mixing one blend after another takes time away from all the other things I have to do and lots of refrigerator space. That being said , the cookbook is basic, the recipes , good. I have made several of them. There is lot of advice , that if you are new to this , would be helpful and lets face it , when you can't have wheat , you need to be able to cook. The flour blend is worth every cent, and really , I did not think it was more expensive than buying all the other flours and mixing the blends. I think everyone who sells food and cookbooks is making a profit, or at least hope they are, so I am not certain what the objections the other reviewer had,had to do with the cookbook. ( Even people with sick kids need to pay the bills). This lady has done a great job with the blend. It is packaged in a nice zipper bag , with an exp. date .. ..and I use it fast enough that it doesn't have to be refrigerated. I also have used the blend in other recipes , with great results, so for us , this is a winner. (I can't wait until this site decides to carry it ).
