A Parable of Delusion Jun 17, 2006
Moore's chapter, "How I Learned to Love my Gay Neighbor," is reprinted on ChristianityToday.com. It's an interesting tale of this "experienced evangelist" who comes, in the end, to acknowledge a little bit of his own meanness, fear, and insecurity--what he calls his "weakness in evangelism." He claims that the experience with a gay neighbor has been used by God to break him of his lack of love. But he protests too much. This narrative reads suspiciously like a parable, and had it not turned out with the gay neighbor studying the Bible with Moore, it's doubtful that Moore would have found anything in this experience that he might call a lesson for himself or others. He has only learned to "love the gay neighbor" when that neighbor courageously opened himself up, took a risk, asked questions, and humbled himself in the face of Moore's insecurity and arrogance about his own Christianity. And yet, Moore congratulates himself, and uses this neat and far too tidy anecdote to take us to school on how to tell the gospel story with grace and passion. What's missing in this chapter anyway, is humility and self-knowledge. The triumph in Moore's parable is when the gay neighbor "cracks" and opens himself up in Moore's view. In spite of Moore's claim, one can't help but see that it's Moore himself who has yet to "crack" and really hear what God is trying to tell him. Repentance for such sour attitudes towards those that are not Christians, which surely must be the first step in any real progress toward sharing the gospel, should perhaps precede authoring a book of canned anecdotes and shallow understanding of the complexity of faith and living.
You will be challenged Mar 8, 2006
As believers, one of the most difficult things to do is tell the world about Jesus. This is all the more true with people that we know well - friends and family. York Moore gives practical advise, shares amusing stories, and challenges the reader to leap out in faith in sharing the greatest gift that they have ever been given - salvation through Jesus Christ. It is probably the best Christian book that I have ever read. Now all I have to do is act on it!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! This book should be in the hands of every Christian as a reminder of Christ's love for all of us. York Moore gets down to the heart of Christianity by sharing the gospel in its simplest yet most profound form. His passion for evangelism is real and his experiences are honest. I believe by reading this book your faith will grow and you will be challenged in your walk with Christ. It is true your faith will grow IF you give it away!
