Item description for The Final Solution: A Novel for the End of Days by Richard F. Dietrich...
The bombs and guns going off in our world, along with practically every bit of political violence of the last forty years, are part of a single man's demented plot to save the world through terror and a climactic act of sacrifice that will make the crucifixion of Christ look small and tame. Or so we are told by Wolf Berlin, who has accidentally uncovered the mad plot. Wolf, an aging and recently divorced anthropologist and sometime actor, finds in today's terrorism, and the incredibly ambitious plot behind it, a reason to attempt to fulfill an old "call" from Jesus, received when Wolf was twelve, to make peace in the world through the instituting of a new religion for the New World Order. As he matured, a skeptical, secularist Wolf dismissed this messianic call as megalomaniac dreaming or, at best, as simply a dream projection of the hopefulness directed in the late 40s at the infant United Nations. Wolf, in fact, has become a debunker of all religious fantasizing. Forty years after the call, however, as technology provides the means to fulfill traditional religious visions of a "Final Solution," of an End Time in which the "saved" triumph over the "damned" in a global war, Wolf decides his "call" was genuine after all and so attempts to forestall the Armageddon he sees coming in the global rise of religious intolerance by building a new religion in which all faiths can find a home. His change of heart is given even greater impetus and urgency when, through a set of odd and ambiguous circumstances, he accidentally learns of the bizarre and fantastic plot of a demented genius, who turns out to be an old friend who had gotten the idea for the mad plot from Wolf many years before but twisted it. As wolf is invited to be the "rock" of the new global religion the mad one plans to form, he now must decide whether to accept the temptation to fulfill his "call" in this way or fight the mad plot. Meanwhile the Doomsday clock ticks on.
