Great for New Believers Jan 30, 2010
5 Things Every Christian Needs to Grow by R.C. Sproul is a great book. Sproul does a great job of introducing 5 comon "means of grace ("tool that God uses to strengthen and nurture us so that we grow in conformity to Christ," page 84). Each chapter is written in an engaging style. Sproul uses an insightful story to draw the reader in, puts forth a solid case based on Scriputre, while pointedly drawing out application for Western believers.
The book is quite brief at 135 pages, but the content serves as a great introduction for new believers. This book seems like a great discipleship tool and aid to those who are loging to grow deeper. The author's writing style is simple yet engaging. This is a great book to give someone who wants to grow in their faith, yet hasn't developed the discipline of being a good reader. The brief nature of the book won't be daunting and the personable writting style of Sproul will be sure to draw them into the book.
POWERFUL AND REWARDING! Dec 8, 2009
This small, but mighty little book has truly been eye opening for me and for those I lead in a small group bible study. I cannot tell you the impact it is having on us and especially in me alone. Thanks to R.C. Sproul and his straight forward teaching in this book, we can grow in our spirituality and have a much richer relationship with God.
Christian Progress Sep 8, 2009
R.C.Sproul is among the most helpful Christian writers of his generation. His books showcase an uncommon ability to communicate effectively and are packed with helpful insights. Five Things Every Christian Needs To Grow speaks to some of the foundational components necessary for Christian progress-Bible study, prayer, worship, service and stewardship. In the chapter on prayer the author brings a brief story from Church history to illustrate a point(he does this in other books also). One of the subheadings in the chapter on prayer is 'prayer as a means of grace'.Prayer is one of the most powerful and important means to become more godly.Though this seems obvious it is something that needs to be emphasized because by nature we have a tendency to rely on our own strength. Even when Mr.Sproul is offering some criticism,it is done in a spirit of grace and gentleness: "How can someone say he loves God but doesn't care about truth?I hear people say ,doctrine divides:of course doctrine divides, but it also unites. It unites the ones who love truth... who are willing to worship Him according to the truth." An important aspect of service is brought out in the chapter on service "you've been serving the wrong things-the Canaanite deities, the paegan idols put those away and serve the Lord."A part of our 'service to God' is to serve righteousness,to seek to be more holy(the negative aspect being to mortify the deeds of the flesh)Romans 6:18 'Being then made free from sin,ye became the servants of righteousness.'When we become more holy we are more useful in God's service and our Christian testimony is adorned. 'Five Things...' perhaps was primarily geared for new or relatively young believers but there is always help and encouragement(from Pastor Sproul)for those who are mature in the Lord as well. Those who are mature spiritually often need to be reminded of the basics. It is another gem from the prolific pen of Pastor Theologian R.C.Sproul.
Five Stars for 5 Things Apr 30, 2009
To be sincerely honest, I don't remember much about this work due to the fact that I read it several months ago and twas not mine.
Nevertheless, I remember getting helpful insight from this and would still like to review this in order to let others who might be thinking of making a purchase based on the information provided from the back cover of the work and other reviews to buy this if you were thinking about it.
Dr. R.C. Sproul is good at what he does because from the two books that I've read from him, this one included, I always learned something new. I personally like what he writes on Bible study, tithing, worship, and stewardship.
I recommend another book: Dr. Steve Lawson's the Unwavering resolve of Jonathan Edwards. Which helps pursue and grow in holiness.
