Item description for John Calvin: And His Passion for the Majesty of God by John Piper...
Overview Nothing mattered more to John Calvin than the centrality, supremacy, and majesty of the glory of God. As Piper concisely but forcefully explores the essence of Calvin's preaching and zeal, he seeks to ignite every Christian's passion so that the glory and supremacy of God takes center-stage in their lives as well.
John Piper fires readers' passion for the centrality and supremacy of God by unfolding Calvin's exemplary zeal for the glory of God.
God rests all too lightly on the church's mind in our time. Consequently, the self-saturation of his people has made God and his glory auxiliary, and his majesty has all but disappeared from the modern evangelical world.
John Calvin saw a similar thing in his day, and it was at the root of his quarrel with Rome. Nothing mattered more to Calvin than the centrality, supremacy, and majesty of the glory of God. His aim, he wrote, was to "set before man], as the prime motive of his existence, zeal to illustrate the glory of God"-a fitting banner over all of the great Reformer's life and work. "The essential meaning of Calvin's life and preaching," writes John Piper, "is that he recovered and embodied a passion for the absolute reality and majesty of God. Such is the aim and burden of this book as well."
As Piper concisely unfolds this predominant theme in Calvin's life, he seeks to fire every Christian's passion for the centrality and supremacy of God, so that God's self-identification in Exodus 3 as "I am who I am" becomes the sun in our solar system too.

Reviews - What do customers think about John Calvin And His Passion For The Majesty Of God?
Short, not what I was expecting Mar 18, 2010
This is more of a pamphlet on the highlights of Calvin's teachings. I was hoping for a little more of his life information. Other than that, a good quick read.
Not much there Dec 23, 2009
I tend to give authors of religious material the benefit of the doubt, but in this case I don't see much doubt. It would be unreasonable to expect a whole lot of depth in such a short book, but I did expect substantially more than I got. The Wikipedia article on Calvin is more substantial than this book. Of course, it takes very little time to read the book, but it's not worth that time and certainly not worth spending $8 on.
Calvin's life condensed Nov 4, 2009
I found this mini book a pleasure to read. In this brief book, John Piper introduces his readers to John Calvin and his deep passion to show case the glory of God. You will learn about Calvin's deep conviction for biblical exposition even in the height of physical pain.
The greatest sticking point was Calvin's reason for writing the Institutes of the Christian Religion. As Calvin noticed the believers being burned alive in France, he wanted to vindicate them by writing what these believers embraced. Calvin said. "that men might know what was the faith held by those whom I saw basely and wickedly defamed." This kind of info helps a reader get into the mind of a theologian to better understand his passion. I will never again be able to read the Institute, without thinking about the martyred saints that inspired these writings.
I would recommend this mini book for anyone wanting to quickly grasp the life and passion of John Calvin. This book can be read in an hour and the PDF is free on John Pipers web page.
An excellent, brief biography of Calvin Oct 24, 2009
Piper succinctly chronicles the life of John Calvin in a way that makes him accessible to the lay Christian. This is a great, brief introduction to Calvin the man, his theology and his legacy. A great starting point for anyone looking for a taste of Calvin, his life and work.
A solid introduction to John Calvin Oct 20, 2009
On the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth, my men's Bible study thought it would be appropriate to do a study on Calvin. We all really enjoyed the book and found it encouraging to reflect on our own passion for the majesty of God.
The book gives us insight into the thinking, character and times of Calvin. It was fascinating to see the historical context and the difficulties that people of the times faced.
I am also glad that Piper addresses the issue of Calvin's involvement in the case of Michael Servetus in the appendix. As brilliant, driven and focused on God's work as Calvin was, he was not without fault. Piper presents a fair handling of the issue.
