Spiritual Leadership in the Global City Dec 9, 2009
Spiritual Leadership in the Global City was written by Mac Pier and published in 2008 by New Hope Publishers. This is a book of stories and mission combined to get your mind and hear thinking about what it means to reach a city. Pier's text looks at twenty different churches and Christian organizations in New York City. He walks you through their development and growth. Each church and organization provides you with a key spiritual leadership insight. It has a unique, engaging, and accessible format.
Quite honestly this is one of the most encouraging reads I have encountered in a long time. I am pastoring in Metro Detroit which by all accounts is a city on the verge of failure. From what I understand this is similar (on a much smaller scale) to what New York was going through in the 70s and 80s. Upon finishing this book I was encouraged that there is hope for our city and surrounding region. I came away with a fresh desire to partner with other churches and leaders for the sake of the gospel.
The most helpful part of this book were the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. The chapters function almost like little parables when paired with the questions. I think this could be timely to be used with a leadership team in a local church in an urban environment.

Encouraging, yet challenging read Sep 25, 2009
When I first started reading Spiritual Leadership in the Global City by Mac Pier, I wasn't quite sure what I was getting myself into. I read a little bit of the summary, but it wasn't until I got into that I realized exactly what it was. This book is a collection of short stories of men and women in the greater NYC area who have stepped out in faith to do what God has called them to do. Stories range from planting churches, to starting schools and seminaries, to sending out mission groups worldwide, to helping improve local housing areas.
Once I got several chapters into the book I began to be very intrigued. The individuals discussed in the book range from highly conservative to incredibly charismatic, and it is amazing to see the overlap of the people in the book. It was amazing and yet challenging at the same time to see so many people working together to see the Gospel preached and lived among the people of the NYC area. All cultures, all nationalities, all economic backgrounds are represented. I highly recommend that you read this book and see the work of a variety of local churches and the work they are doing. Nearly everything discussed in the book has never made national headlines, yet these people are making great strides for the kingdom. Do yourself a favor and check out this encouraging, yet challenging read.

Christian Leadership on the Grandest of Urban Stages May 19, 2009
At a time when the Church is challenged as never before to have a viable, sustainable, reproducible and impactful presence in urban environments, Mac Pier punctuates the invaluable significance of "effective spiritual leadership" as the "antidote to and strategy for these challenges/opportunities." Though he effectively emphasizes the need felt by churches and ministry leaders for the development of critical leadership skills, Pier is not content to highlight the need but points to hope for the Church in the city. The pages of Spiritual Leadership in the Global City portray testimonial pictures from the churches of the Big Apple--pictures which speak louder than mere words or principles--of how spiritual leadership looks in the urban context. What is more, as a world-class leader himself in a world-class city, Pier describes how movements like Concerts of Prayer Greater New York and the New York City Leadership Center are positioning themselves to serve the Church and its leadership with "a commitment to intercession, innovation and collaboration."
History of a global city! Feb 20, 2009
Thanks to Mac Pier and his researched work, a very comprehensive and fascinating history of New York City churches has been compiled. A must read to appreciate the diversity and depth of faith that many in this great city have developed over the years!
