Great book Feb 21, 2007
I loved this book, it's written by a very pragmatic author. An other book I like is the seven habits of highly effective people.
good book with valid information Jan 9, 2007
This book rings true with its information and is a good buy for those who need help to change and improve their lives, due to patterns they have in their own lives.
Life Strategies Aug 25, 2006
Life Strategies by Phillip C McGraw is a fine book about how to look at yourself. PCM gives you a realistic feeling about how to protray yourself with no nonsense ideas. He has you approach your important categories in life (ie; personal, professional, relationships, family and spiritual) by applying his ten "Laws of Life." By taking responsibility for your actions and realistically evaluating your strengths and weaknesses you can improve your quality of life. His book is a fine read and useful to anyone who wants to learn more about what is important to help them live better and reach their personal goals. I definitely would recommend this book, because it's ideas are realistic and helped me focus on what is important in my day to day activities.
This book changed my life. Aug 12, 2006
If you are one of those people who shy away from doing a truly in-depth analysis of why you perpetuate unproductive, dysfunctional behavior, this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you are willing and desire to explore the inner you and examine what motivates your behavior even if the truth is ugly, hateful and makes you want to run and hide, then this book may be helpful to you. My quest for self-improvement led me to read this book and ultimately discover the hidden payoffs for my counterproductive behavior. This book, in addition to Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich", helped me to totally change my thought process and as a result I lost 89 pounds with no gym, trainer or surgery. Nothing but pure motivation propelled me to exercise everyday (at home with videotapes and outside-first walking, then running) and it was therapy for me. I've made a 180 degree turn from the negativity I used to manifest due to my pessimistic viewpoint of life. I've improved 100% body and mind and give the credit to both of the earlier mentioned books and to God, because I also prayed a lot.
Great self-help... if you follow through... Jul 18, 2006
Even though this book was written in 1999, I only came across it in 2005, and took my time to read it. It has been very helpful in identifying why I sometimes do what I do, and what I need to change. It is true that one size does not fit all, and that is why this book is written in a "coaching" manner of asking the right questions in the assignments so that we take time to reflect on these questions so as to gain a greater awareness of ourself.
Just by knowing the 10 Life Laws itself and the Strategy already highlights what we need to do with our lives:
Life Law #1 - You either get it, or you don't. Strategy: Become one of those who gets it.
Life Law #2 - You create your own experience. Strategy: Acknowledge and accept accountability for your life.
Life Law #3 - People do what works. Strategy: Identify the payoffs that drive your behavior and that of others.
Life Law #4 - You cannot change what you do not acknowledge. Strategy: Get real with yourself about your life and everybody in it.
Life Law #5 - Life rewards action. Strategy: Make careful decisions and then pull the trigger.
Life Law #6 - There is no reality; only perception. Strategy: Identify the filters through which you view the world.
Life Law #7 - Life is managed; it is not cured. Strategy: Learn to take charge of your life.
Life Law #8 - We teach people how to treat us. Strategy: Own, rather than complain, how people treat you.
Life Law #9 - There is power in forgiveness. Strategy: Open your eyes to what anger and resentment are doing to you.
Life Law #10 - You have to name it before you can claim it. Strategy: Get clear about what you want and take your turn.
It is important to read this book reflectively rather than critically. In a sense, there is nothing new under the sun, and the principles laid out in the book are not new, and used by counselors all over. Let this be healing to your bones, and do not rush through the assignments. It would also be good to have someone to go through it together, so that you can share with one another, like in group experience therapies.
