Item description for Training Manual for Cultural Combat: Apologetics and Preaching for the Postmodern Mind by Phillip A. Gray...
Overview Training Manual For Cultural Combat is a revision of the author?s project/dissertation for the Doctor of Ministry degree performed under the auspices of the faculty of Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, South Carolina in 1999. Although the format is fairly artificial (in view of being originally written according to the standard requirements of the Seminary), the author believes that this publication may be of some value in the preparation of preachers and in the education of students of apologetics who are facing the unique challenges to the contemporary defense of the gospel. Readers are urged to remember the academic genesis of these pages and to keep in mind that this work, which is now intended for general consumption, was first a research project penned in the conventional diction of that dissertation genre. The original study necessitated a certain style that is less than typical when compared to general writing on the subject at hand. Quite candidly, this ?warmed over? version of the original volume may not provide the most scintillating read that one can find on the market today! And yet, I urge the reader to be patient with me as I attempt to work out carefully the important topics that are treated herein. Preachers of the gospel and professional Christian apologists may find in this book a few useful contributions to their respective fields of labor. At the same time, the primary purpose for this investigation has been to show the practical connection that must exist between the public proclamation of the gospel and its formal defense (i.e. Christian apologetics). My hope is that this work, at least to some degree, may serve the stated purpose. My fervent prayer is that by means of this effort Christians may be reinforced in their confidence and encouraged in their proclamation of the original sound doctrine of the apostolic era. We will attempt to make the case that the original doctrine was accompanied by confirmatory evidences. It is my sincere conviction that these evidences are still desperately needed for instilling faith in our skeptical contemporaries in the New Millennium and for waging victorious cultural combat against the forces that conspire against the Christian faith.
