Item description for Philly Live by Phil Keaggy...
The centerpiece of the DVD is a live acoustic concert recorded one night in late October 2001 -- just Phil with his JamMan and a guitar. How does one distill more than three decades worth of songs and compositions into a single, representative concert set list? Quite a challenge, but the DVD is very successful in its cross-cut of Phil's rich musical history. "Philly Live" includes old and new material, concert staples and unexpected surprises, simple vocal tunes and extended acoustic jams. This will be a great "first concert" for any new fan and a satisfying "homecoming" for old fans!
Highlights of the concert are the extended versions of "Salvation Army Band," "Strong Tower," "True Believers," and "John the Revelator" that showcase Phil's willingness to run headlong into the unknown at breakneck speeds. But just as powerful are the simple and heartwarming "Spend My Life with You," "Olivia," and "Maker of the Universe." Given the closeness to 9/11, Phil's concert is more toned down than usual, but there is enough variety to make fans happy. Although the DVD contains few purely instrumental tunes, there are plenty of extended improvisations and outstanding fretwork.
The concert is fantastic, but the bonus DVD material is the icing on the cake. On "In the Studio," Phil gives a brief history of his recording and songwriting techniques as well as a bit of his musical philosophy. The DVD also features thoughts, insights and stories from Robin Crow, Muriel Anderson, Randy Stonehill, Jerry Gaskill & Doug Pinnick (King's X), Lynn Nichols, road manager Brian Persall and webmaster and publicist Robin Eastburn, among others. There's even a video of Phil playing "Way Back Home" at the infamous water pump! The crowning touch is having Phil Keaggy and Brian Persall in your living room when you watch the DVD! Virtually, at least. There is an optional audio commentary during the concert that's like hanging out with Phil and Brian while you watch the concert. They discuss the who, what, where and why of Phil's songs and techniques, wardrobe and even his mistakes. Far from being boring technobabble, the humorous banter between Phil and Brian will keep every fan entertained.

Almost Like Seeing Phil Live...But Not Quite Apr 3, 2006
Recorded not long after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Phil Keaggy's show in Philadelphia is a wonderful performance by the guitar virtuoso. The show is entirely acoustic in nature played in fron of what looks to be a smallish church audience. The play list samples material from Phil's earlier works as well as some things from the Crimson and Blue and True Believer albums. I think my favorite number is "Shapes of Green" which showcases Keaggy's melodic and technical mastery in equal measures.
Captured nicely on several of the tracks is Keaggy's amazing ability to improvise around his own material and his ability to use looping to create a unique sonic environment. The ancillary materials are good with some electric moments captured there including a beautiful rendition of "Nothing but the Blood."
My biggest complaints with the album is a lack of continuity in the performance where a couple of songs are obviously left out and much of Phil's banter with the crowd is lost. Having seen Phil in concert, I missed seeing that interplay. Additionally, I would like to have seen one or two more additional instrumental selections but that's most likely a personal preference and some of that is captured in the ancillaries.
All in all, this is an excellent DVD and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys seeing and hearing excellent music performed. It's not as good as seeing Phil live but it's wonderful nevertheless.
Great Music, Great Musician! Dec 2, 2005
This is an excellent DVD, and I was actually there when it was filmed. My son, who just turned three, absolutely loves this DVD and Phil Keaggy. If you love good music, I highly recommend this DVD!
Great to finally WATCH Phil Keaggy's music! Nov 11, 2005
I've been a fan of Phil Keaggy for several years now and have never had the chance to see him live, so I really enjoyed this DVD. Phil Keaggy is an amazing guitarist, and a great song writer and it really shows in this performance. I only wish he had included some songs from his self titled album that had come out several months before this performance took place (by far my favorite album). This is just a preferance of mine so it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a great DVD well deserving of 5 stars! Any guitarist will appreciate the live SOLO performance Phil gives! I might add that the camera work and sound on the DVD are of the highest quality. I will be enjoying this DVD for quite some time!
phil keaggy - philly live Sep 30, 2005
Words cannot really describe this DVD. Phil Keaggy has no match in style and diversity. This live concert video shows him at his absolute best. And the close up shots of his amazing guitar stylings will make you wonder what kind of magic he is performing...if you don't get goosebumps, something is wrong with you. Phil layers in background licks, percusion (by tapping on the guitar), and adds his own background vocals, without ever hesitating...it is seemless!
The interview with Phil and friends of his really add a lot to this video. But his talent as a musician, vocalist, and songwriter overwhelmes everything else.
If you are a guitar player, you might have to take anti-depressants after watching Phil. But please watch, you won't be sorry!
