Petra was my introduction into Christian Rock Aug 30, 2009
It all began in 1985 with their "Beat The System" album. It was o.k., but then I went back to listening to my 60's music like The Doors, Grateful Dead, and alot of 60's garage bands. In 1994 when I was at my lowest it was Petra that got me thinking about Jesus again. I saw the video to "Praying Man", and the tune was pretty good. A few days later I borrowed the tape, and listened to it all the way through, and revival came into my heart, and I started checking out other Christian artists. As for this album it does rock a little, but it's also has some slick production as the instruments are lush sounding instead of rocking and rolling. I won't let this take away from the message that's still relevant today in 2009. We still need Jesus, and Petra is one of the ways Jesus uses us to get the word about him out. There's some rocking tunes on here like "Midnight Oil", "Praying Man", "Sleeping Giant", and then there are the ballads like: "He's Been In My Shoes", "Just Reach Out" and "Nails On The Cross". In 2009 I wish I was a spiritual giant, so I can show my son Jesus, so I have to do as the song says "Just Reach Out". It's not classic Petra, but it's one of the best albums of the 90's.
The very best of Petra! Jan 22, 2009
This album came out when I was 5. I remember listening to the songs on the radio and my mom's cassette player. I loved it then and I love it now. I'm a drummer and this is a great CD to play to! My favorite songs are "Sleeping Giant", "Underneath the Blood", and "Praying Man". Classic Petra.
Wake up call Oct 2, 2008
This album rock's Postive songs on here. Like praying man the best on this cd i think petra. Some light and some heavy on here like underneath the blood clever song. And strong convictions very good hard rock song. Mark of the cross very good upright and faithfilling song. And to tell you truth like most of the songs on here petra rock all the way and a postive manner.
Rockers in Deed! Jul 13, 2008
After making two stone-hard classics "Beyond Belief" and "Unseen Power" PETRA contienues with the same music style. If you loved those two albums, you will like also "Wake-Up Call". Originally, there was only one song I bought this album for: "Midnight Oil". It's an awesome song! Very catching! When I saw the music video, I was in hook! That is one of the Petra's best songs ever! "royal-loyal-soil-oil"...that's so amazing! The next song "Good News" is OK! It's not a great song but you can listen to it through although it is too long. The starting riff is almost like AC/DC. "Strong Convictions" is a good song too. At first I didn't like it but after five listening times I started to like it quite much. The songs "Praying Man", "Sleeping Giant", and as well as "Underneath the Blood" are great - although "Underneath the Blood" sounds a little bit scary in chorus. There's FOUR peaceful songs in the album: "He's Been in My Shoes", "Believer in Deed", "Marks of the Cross", and of course "Just Reach Out" which was quite a big hit in 90's (in the gospel field). I like the songs "Just Reach Out" and "Believer in Deed" but other ballads are too lame. A nice album from Petra! Great believers and great rockers! Stars: Midnight Oil, Praying Man, Just Reach Out
One Of Petra's Heavier Offerings Dec 4, 2006
Throughout their thirty-plus years as a band, Petra has had quite a number of member changes. With that, of course, comes a varied musical styling on each of their albums. "Wake-Up Call" falls into the heavier category of Petra's catalogue of albums. Although their last studio album, "Jekyll and Hyde," is probably their heaviest album, "Wake-Up Call" is not too far behind. This is shown through powerful arena rock tunes like "Sleeping Giant" and "Midnight Oil." Other heavier tunes on this album include "Strong Conviction" and "Underneath The Blood." Of course, no Petra album would be complete without a couple of ballads, and the tunes that fit the bill here are "Just Reach Out" and "Marks Of The Cross."
Fans of Petra's "Beyond Belief" album and "No Doubt" will definitely enjoy this album. It has a very good balance of powerful arena rock and lighter ballads. It's one of Petra's best John Schlitt-era albums and is definitely worthy of purchase.
