Collection includes work from all the great masters of the Dutch Golden Age
Discusses over 150 paintings in depth
The Mauritshuis in The Hague is one of the oldest museum collections in the Netherlands. It was begun in 1817 when King William I donated his ancestors' painting collection to the State of the Netherlands, which then purchased the Mauritshuis to accomodate the collection.
The collection is small but of exceptionally high quality and includes among its holdings Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson, Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft and Girl with a Pearl Earring, and work by Carel Fabritius and Jan Steen among other icons. The museum also has a fine selection of Flemish painters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthonie van Dyck, as well as portraits by Hans Holbein the Younger.
This richly illustrated book is written by the museum's curators and they discuss every aspect of the history of the collection and the museum, thus providing a greater appreciation of this gem in the world of art.
