Item description for Becoming More Human: Exploring the Interface of Spirituality, Discipleship and Faith Community by Peter R. Holmes, PhD...

Overview
We are watching the collapse of the traditional Western church. New models are desperately needed to give postmodern people a reason to follow Christ. In Becoming More Human, Peter Holmes presents a theoretical framework for a new type of local congregation-what he refers to as a therapeutic faith community-based on a clinical model that has been running very successfully for a number of years at Christ Church Deal in the UK. The author outlines a journey of therapeutic discipleship change toward Christ-likeness, using a Biblical pneuma-psychology and therapeutic process developed over 35 years. He explains how "out of the box" thinking can lead to a particularly vibrant community life attractive to the un-churched.

Reviews - What do customers think about Becoming More Human?

A worthwhile read  Mar 25, 2006
I was excited to purchase this book. The title itself was enough to hook me. Originally a doctoral dissertation, Holmes has made the work accessible to those interested in the intersection between spiritual formation and psychology. It is well organized, well-written, and chock full of elaborative footnotes. I love how Holmes brings church history, philosophy, theology, psychology, and spiritual traditions to bear on the question: How do people change? Further, the entire text is borne out of personal, pastoral experience which utilizes a broad-scoped qualitative research study by a friend of his. It is written from and for the church, and it is a valuable text I'll likely use in an upcoming psychology-theology integration course where I teach.
