Item description for Drink of the Stream: Prayers of the Carmelites by Penny Hickey & Kieran Kavanaugh...
Carmelite history and prayer begin with Elijah on Mount Carmel. From Elijah has descended a long line of saints who have heard the voice of the Lord calling them to leave everything and come "drink from the stream". This book is an invitation for you to come and pray with the holy men and women of the Carmelite order.
The prayers and meditations in this book will help the reader listen to and pray with the saints of Carmel throughout the ages, from Elijah through the twentieth century. In these prayers are stories of particular times, places, longings, sometimes suffering, at other times ecstatic joy. These prayers allow one to enter into the most intimate depths of the souls of Carmelite saints. How better to learn than from the masters themselves.
This book is made up of the prayers and meditations of more than twenty-five saints, along with a short biography of each saint, and numerous illustrations. In addition to helping one with prayer and meditation, it also provides prayer for specific topics. Whether one is a beginner or highly advanced in prayer, there is a prayer suitable for nearly every occasion. These magnificent prayers echo from prison cells, hospital beds, battlefields, and even treetops. It gives special emphasis to the prayers and meditations of the three great Carmelite mystics: Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Thrse of Lisieux. But the other twenty-two saints include a wonderful variety, with Elizabeth of the Trinity, Simon Stock, Titus Brandsma, Edith Stein, and many more. Illustrated

A fountain of prayers in the Carmelite tradition Sep 6, 2007
"Drink of the Stream:Prayers of the Carmelites," a collection gathered together by Penny Hickey,O.C.D.S.,and published by Ignatius Press, is a rewarding compendium of prayers from many of the known, and lesser known, Carmelite saints from throughout Catholic Church history. Prayers written by many of the great practitioners of Carmelite spirituality, including the beloved Caremlite Doctors of the Church, St.Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and the Little Flower, St. Therese of Lisieux, will lead the reader to a deeper and more prayerful understaning of their relationship with the Holy Trinity-Father,Son & Holy Spirit.
Like Hickey, I am a Lay Carmelite myself, a T.O.Carm. from the province of St. Elias here in the U.S. I was quite pleased to see that prayers from some of the lesser known Carmelite saints were included in this collection. My Carmelite name is taken from Venerable Cyril of the Mother of God. It was Ven. Cyril who rescued the statue of the Infant of Prague from the cathedral where it was kept, after a sacking by the Saxons in the 17th century. I have always found one particular prayer of his quite touching. It is included in this collection:
Jesus, you decided to become a child, And I'm coming to you full of trust. I believe that your attentive love Forestalls all my needs. Even for the intercession of your holy Mother, You can meet my necessities, spiritual as well as material. If I pray according to your holy will. I love you with all my heart, all my strength. I beg your pardon if my weakness makes me sin. I repeat with the Gospel "Lord,if you want you can heal me." I leave you to decide how and when. I'm ready to accept suffering,if this is your will, but help me not to become hardened to it, rather to bear fruit. Help me to be a faithful servant And for your sake, holy Child, To love my neighbor as myself. Almighty Child, unceasingly I pray to you To support me in my necessities Of the present moment. Grant me the grace to remain in you, To be possessed and to possess you entirely, With your parents,Mary and Joseph, In the eternal praise Of your heavenly servants.
"Drink of the Stream:Prayers of the Carmelites" contains a wealth of spiritual treasures like this passage form Ven. Cyril of the Mother of God. It would be beneficial addtion to any prayer library, especially one dedicated to prayer in the Carmelite tradition. Though paricularly helpful to anyone interested in Carmelite spirituality, it is also highly recommended to anyone seeking to enhance & enrich their prayer life in general. It is an aid to a deepening of the spiritual life that ought not to be missed.
A Very Good Prayer Book Apr 3, 2007
This Prayer Book has to be my favorite of all the ones I've used in the past. It has a lot of personal prayers of Carmelite Saints, including the favorites like St. Therese of Liseux, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Edith Stein (Teresa Benedicta), including many others. Each section has not only the prayers of that particular Saint or Blessed; but it also has a short profile on them and one or more pictures.
If you want a deeper and richer prayer life than I would definately suggest that you get this book.
