Item description for Marital Spirituality: The Search for the Hidden Ground of Love by Patrick J. McDonald & Claudette M. McDonald...
Overview Beautifully written by veteran marriage counselors, this is a fresh look at marital dynamics and marital spirituality. Using classic wisdom, stories, personal anecdotes, activities, and old and new prayer forms, the book offers four new ways couples can find a more intimate experience with each other and with God. These proven methods show couples how to develop a more sensitized bond, open up to the sacred, embrace the personal God, and create a more contemplative marriage. The McDonalds use lectio divina--shared scripture reading--as the heart of the process to finding God as the hidden ground of love. The process helps couples give definition and substance to what they so often long for in their relationship. What's more, the process works even when couples are in the middle of turmoil and feel nothing but emptiness, making this a tool for healing as well as enrichment. Marital Spirituality is an excellent resource for pastors, Christian counselors, and premarriage educators. With its warmth, passion, sensitivity and readability, it's also meant for direct use by couples themselves.

Review of : Mc Donald, Patrick J. & Mc Donald, Claudette M. Marital Spirituality: The Search for the Hidden Ground of Love. Paulist Press. 1999. ISBN 0-8091-3891-3. Three years ago, P. J. & Claudette McDonald were the guest speakers and facilitators of the National Marriage Retorno Conference near St. Louis at Our Lady of the Snows Retreat Center. Fr. Mel Hemann has known them for many years and Mike & I had the pleasure of meeting them before that National MR Conference. The McDonalds are capable and expressive articulators of methods to help us improve our spiritual lives both in person and in writing. Their book The Soul of a Marriage and its accompanying workbook were part of the foundation for the presentations and sharing at the National MR Conference. With Marital Spirituality: The Search for the Hidden Ground of Love, P. J. & Claudette have given all couples interested in deepening their relationship with God an aid of impressive dimension. Scripture has implications for living out our faith in today's hectic and frenetic world. These implications are a main ingredient in the McDonalds' counsel to establish an ever-deeper intimacy with God. They refresh our memories about a well-established tradition of how to approach Scripture - Lectio Divina. What is new and unique in the McDonald's book is how they tie Lectio Divina to marriage and its experience of spirituality. The practice of Lectio Divina requires time for reading and reflecting on what has been read. For those who are married, it is essential to incorporate the marriage and couple perspective into this ancient method. The Mc Donalds do this by setting up a pattern directly tied to the couple experience. They have a system of three steps which is very well described in their book and there are many examples provided to illustrate this process. Step 1 is to quiet down and catch our breath. Step 2 involves reading a story or piece of Scripture, listening to the Word of God, and inviting our hearts and minds to take in the message. Step 3 requires us to answer four questions: What is the text saying in itself?; What is God saying to us personally?; What do we want to say to God on the basis of this text?; and What difference can this text make for how we live our lives? Heavily imbedded in the Mc Donalds' counsel for growth in marital spirituality is the need for open sharing between married partners. This method allows us to become more centered in God's love for us. This process allows us to be different from one another while still being in close and deep awareness and communication with each other. The Mc Donalds provide the history and theology of both Lectio Divina and marriage and illuminate how they are linked. This provides a fertile ground for growth in marital spirituality. They show how all this relates to sound marital development with very readable material. Then they illustrate each of the concepts presented with many stories of how these experiences work in the lives of couples. The Mc Donalds' book is a gift to the married, and to those working with them, to develop stronger and healthier marriages. They have lived "coupleness", have found the transforming love of God, have continued to work at growing in relationship to God and each other, have counselled others to do the same, and have developed a manual to share with all who thirst for growth and deepening of the marriage bond. Deeply imbedded in their understanding of "coupleness" is the premise that each of us in a marriage needs to be secure and aware of our own talents, strengths, and weaknesses. It is this awareness that allows us become truly more intimate with each other, share more profoundly our insights with each other, and encourage our development and growth as a couple so that we may more deeply bond and contribute another healthy, sound, spiritually-based couple to the world. They make their contemplative marriage something possible to attain, worth the pursuit, and very attractive. They know that God loves them and lives in their marriage. I want the same in my marriage. I am ready to attempt to move farther in the same direction by following their suggestions. This process is worthy of perseverance in the effort so that God can truly become the center of our marital bond.
