Item description for The No-Nonsense Guide to Tourism (No-Nonsense Guides) by Pamela Nowicka, Peter Veruki, Ken Kliban, Nona Pipes, N. Takahashi, Carl Bildt, Open University & B. Teissier...
This guide demystifies the often invisible impacts of global tourism, one of the biggest industries in the world, from labor conditions to development by stealth, to the role of elites and the cultural impacts on both the visitor and the visited.
It also takes in themes such as the gap year and the role of travel and vacations in Western cultures, and examines the "happy smiling faces" syndrome and asks whether this is just a reworking of old colonial relationships.
Pamela Nowicka is a journalist and consultant writing on numerous tourism and ethics subjects.

Reviews - What do customers think about The No-Nonsense Guide to Tourism (No-Nonsense Guides)?
Disturbing. Jan 5, 2008
The tourism industry is changing the world. It is easy to assume that tourism in the "Global South" (i.e. Africa, Latin America, Southern/Central Asia, the Mideast) is beneficial to impoverished people. Unfortunately, this assumption is largely false. As this book shows, the relationship is largely exploitative, and the local poor often gain far less than they lose. For socially conscious people who enjoy travel, this is an absolute must read.
