More About P. K. Hallinan
P.K. Hallinan began writing children's books 40 years ago when his wife asked him to make a book for their two young sons as a Christmas gift. He did, and the feedback he got from friends and neighbors inspired him to write more books. Since then, P.K. has written and illustrated nearly 100 children's books and has sold more than 9,000,000 copies worldwide.
P.K. was born in Los Angeles in 1944 and spent his youth primarily in Bethesda, Maryland and in the San Fernando Valley. Although P.K. never studied art, his disappointment with the work of the artist assigned to illustrate his first book motivated him to learn to draw. He has been illustrating his own books ever since.
"If I did any one thing right," says P.K., "I decided very early on to write books that help children and parents alike have better and happier lives. That decision has kept many of my books in-print for more than 25 years, because the values I teach are timeless."
His newest book, "A LIFE THAT MATTERS: Five Steps to Making a Difference", is his first book for adults. In it he describes five simple ways to add significance to virtually any career.
P.K. is also an ordained minister. He lives with his wife, Jeanne, and his boxer, Betty, in the mountains above Ashland and also at the beach, in Brookings, Oregon.
Reviews - What do customers think about My Grandma and I (...and I)?
Great for many grandmas and kids Mar 9, 2007
My Grandma and I is a fun book by P.K. Hallinan about a boy and a girl's relationship with their grandma. The book describes and pictures them playing hide and seek, playing with crayons and clay, playing counting games, working in the garden, fishing, watching movies, playing at the beach, eating a picnic - all with grandma. Grandma is also shown comforting a little one after he's fallen off a bike, giving the kids a bath, and putting them to bed. Christianity plays a backseat role in this book and only comes up at bedtime (prayer), and when Grandma comforts a child (by "showing compassion and God's tender ways').
What I Like: The illustrations are colorful and fun, showing a gray-haired, but young-at-heart grandma. The text is in rhyme.
What I dislike: Nothing.
Overall Rating: Excellent.
Age Appeal: 4 to 8, but my baby has enjoyed this book since she was about 9 months old.

Second only to Precious Moments in ugliness and dogmatic content Dec 16, 2006
All four volumes in the Hallinan series "My ____ and I" suffer from googly, balloony illustration and such torturously forced rhymes as could only have come from utterly uninspired use of a rhyming dictionary. Two examples: From My Mommy and I: "We like to dress up and go out to church/We like having picnics in the dogwood and birch." For My Daddy and I: "We like telling stories/We like pedal cars/We like sharing cares as we stare at the stars." See a pattern here? In addition, two of the four volumes refer directly to "church" and one specifically to God. I am sorry that I read any of the four of these cloying, ugly volumes even once and am glad to have "disappeared" them before my child was old enough to have experienced them. If you do happen to be a lover of Precious Moments, however, then these are definitely for you.
Wonderful story for kids to share with Grandma Apr 28, 2006
P.K. Hallinan has a way with words and pictures. We bought many of these books over the years, but this one will always hold a special place in my son's heart. We lost Grandma when he was 5, but he'll always have this book that reminds him of the happy times they shared before she got sick.
Great Book for Grandmas May 13, 2005
I gave this book to my mom for mother's day. I was hoping that she would enjoy reading it to my son, her grandson. It has a wonderful little story of all the things grandmas can do with their grandchildren. It even gave her ideas! She loves it and he loves to hear her read it. P.K. Hallinan writes wonderful stories.
Grandparents raising Grandchildren Nov 30, 1999
Raising a grandchild poses many hurddles. One of them is finding books that address the situation of Grandparent as Parent. Thankfully, this beautiful story answers that need. Unlike the standard fare of books like Runaway Bunny, the caregiver in this story is the Grandmother, not the mother. My Grandaughter loved to hear about a child living with his Grandma, and all the fun they have together.
