Students of church history and monastic and ascetic life will find this volume of much interest. Contained are three important documents of early Christian Church:The Sayings of the Fathers-written by holy men who separated themselves from their communities and lived as hermits along the banks of the Nile. The Conferences of Cassian-John Cassian visited Egypt and carried the message of the desert fathers to monasteries in Gaul. The Rule of Saint benedict-Benedict utilized such documents as the Sayings and the Conferences and adapted them, applying the way of obedience, humility and patience to all aspects of monastic life.

Reviews - What do customers think about Western Asceticism (Library of Christian Classics)?

A Wonderful Resource  Apr 8, 2009
This work contains the sayings of the Desert Fathers organized thematically as well as the Conferences of St. John Cassian and the Rule of St. Benedict. These three works are an important foundation to monastic spirituality in both the Catholic West and Orthodox East. Additionally all three texts are quite dense with spiritual wisdom and a valuable resource for pastoral care and personal growth. Highly recommended as valuable to the scholar, pastor and layman alike.
God be with you.
