Item description for Practical Theology: An Introduction by Richard R. Osmer...

Overview
Every church congregation encounters challenging situations, some the same the world over, and others specific to each church. Richard Osmer here seeks to teach congregational leaders - including, but not limited to, clergy - the requisite knowledge and skills to meet such situations with sensitivity and creativity. Osmer develops a framework for practical theological interpretation in congregations by focusing on four key questions: What is going on in a given context? Why is this going on? What ought to be going on? and How might the leader shape the context to better embody Christian witness and mission? The book is unique in its attention to interdisciplinary issues and the ways that theological reflection is grounded in the spirituality of leaders. Useful, accessible, and lively - with lots of specific examples and case studies - Osmer's Practical Theology effectively equips congregational leaders to guide their communities with theological integrity.

Reviews - What do customers think about Practical Theology?

Four Tasks  Aug 15, 2008
When faced with a difficult situation, this book invites us to ask four questions: What is happening? Why is it happening? What should be happening? How might we respond? These questions correspond to four tasks: a descriptive-empirical task, an interpretive task, a normative task, and a pragmatic task. This set of tasks provides the structure of the book, which expands on them and draws insights from the human sciences, the Bible, theology, ethics, and organizational theory in a cross-disciplinary approach. The book is grounded in a Christian faith language and perspective.

The author wants his readers to be better 'interpretive guides' for persons who have been 'brought up short' by complexity, suffering, or problems in life, as well as to help groups of people pass through 'deep change' leading toward transformation. The case studies he presents are helpful, as are the occasional tables summarizing key ideas. Local pastors and chaplains will benefit from these insights, finding fresh vision for their work. The concepts are challenging to grasp for those outside the academy, but the book will no doubt reward repeated reading.
